Title: Southern Louisiana - Day 35 of No A/C
Post by: Elyse on July 07, 2014, 06:59:55 AM
Good morning everyone!

Today marks the 35th day in a row I have gone without A/C in my house.  I don't live in the shade, so my house has been getting quite warm.  But I work all afternoon - evening.  I come home at night, when I can cool the house easily with open windows.

It is a very old house, and I was expecting electricity to run $200 a month just because of the inefficiency of the place.  It had the cheapest rent, though, and would have wound up saving money even if it was $200.

No A/C (but using fans) brought it down to $80.  The appliances in the place are energy hogs.  Sadly, I do need to dry clothes in the machine because anything I have hung up has become moldy in this humidity.  Still quite inefficient (this was the absolute largest my electricity was in my old apartment with roommates who whined about temps) but now I'm saving money on rent and electricity.

I enjoy very hot temperatures - that's why I moved down here.  If I was home in the middle of the day, I would be worried.  But it is cool enough in the evenings - why cool an empty house during the day?

Wow that's impressive! I live in Dallas, it's hot but doesn't have the humidity, and I only made it to May. Wasn't so much me but my 9 year old, she is pretty resilient but started sweating above 85 degrees in the house :(

I have noticed how crazy expensive AC is, I would love to keep it off as long as I can. Well done to you!

That's awesome.  I lived in South Louisiana my whole life up until about 1 year ago.  We did the best we could, leaving the A/C off as long as we could bear it, but never were able to completely go without.  Major props to you.

Good for you, but I can't do it.  I live in the Dallas area and I set mine at 78 and that keeps it a little too warm, but fairly comfortable.  I am a middle aged woman and I can't deal with it being too hot.  My son is very hot natured and would like me to lower the temp, but I am steadfastly keeping it at 78.  Even with that, my electricity for June was $126.00  (At my old house our electricity was around $500 this time of the year, so that is fabulous for me, but maybe not for you other Mustachians out there.)

Wow!  That's impressive.  I thought I was good living in DC without turning on the AC so far this summer.  But you have me beat!

I live near Hoo Stan and there is no way I could do this. Kudos.
