sold my chevelle..... :'(
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:18:59 PM »
It had to be done, I guess... I know my life will go on, and likely be better, knowing that my insurance is cheaper and maintenance costs are gone... But I am really really going to miss the sweet sound of my dual exhaust and 350 engine as I drive my minivan... And ride my bike... Bye bye Camilla. ( yes, I named my 72 chevelle Camilla... What of it?) I'm not sure if this should be on the badass thread... Or the sadass thread... Stupid logical choices :( haha!

Thank you... I'm hoping I feel better about it tomorrow... And when I hit  financial independence, I'm gonna buy myself another one :)

Did you get good dollars for it?  Is your car 4 speed muncie with hurst shifter?  Headers, cams?   I remember my friend who had one.  The car with camel heads was a beast.

Yes, I got good money for it :) and, no, it was a stock 350 Malibu with everything original. Was going to make a project out of it with my three kids, but I was at the tipping point where I was about to dump $$$$ into it when I decided to work on a better life instead of better stuff.  Using the proceeds to pay off some bills. And the extra to pad the emergency fund... So much less fun, but I'm sure I will retire at least a few years sooner now :)

Good for you. I know it was a hard thing to do, but it was a ball-and-chain when it comes to being able to retire. Once you reach financial independence and are able to buy one without it being a financial anchor, it will be that much sweeter.

Thank you! I am trying to put a positive spin on the whole ordeal :)  It was a ball and chain.  I need to pay these bills off.  I hope that I am teaching my kids that we don't have to be attached to things... when we can always buy them again someday.  I had a chevelle when I was 18... I'm sure I will have another when I am 50 :)

I have bought and sold many muscle cars over the years.  I enjoyed most of them and miss them in the sense that I could see further potential and cool stuff to be done on them.  The problem is that usually I wouldn't have the time or money to implement my dreams, at least fully.

These days I'm paring down and I have the goal of only working on one thing at a time (car, house, whatever).  I still have some ambitious car plans, but I want to do them fully, which will mean waiting until I have the rest of my finances in order and can prioritize the time for the project as well.

I'm happier right now knowing I'm headed for a future that will allow me to do projects the right way, rather than half assing several at one time and staying on the treadmill of screwed up personal finances as a result.  I bet you will be also.

P.S.  Love the Chevelles.  My brother has a 68 right now.  I am a Buick guy and have a killer future 70-72 Skylark project floating around in my head.

You are absolutely right.  I actually felt guilty because I couldn't put the time into fixing it up yet, not to mention that I felt guilty pulling money out of the budget for even the smallest of repairs.  Just the relief from that guilt will be a huge bonus.  When I have garage space, no debt at all, and no anxiety about possible future college tuition bills (the kids have to pay their own way, but I need to be there as a backup plan... but, shhhhh... don't tell them that!)  The worst part is for the moment, my kids are furious with me for selling it!  I know they will get over it, as will I :) but it was just so fun to drive :) The guy who bought it is going to make it perfect, so I feel like it is going in the right direction!

I have the same issues with cars big plans and other commitments.  I said by to my 77 celica project.  Was hard! The cost and time and space was too prohibitive.  Ever since my house and relationship have been way better.

Wait... A 77 Celica is a project now?

Times change :) haha! I am sure the feeling is the same, reguardless of the type of "project" :)

Congrats on the hard sell.  I will be trying to sell my Mustang this summer so I'll be in your shoes shortly.  As bummed as I am to sell it I am actually really excited to free up the cash.  Lots of memories in that car though so I'm sure it will be tough.

Congrats!  I know how hard that must have been!

I know I really should sell a car (or maybe 2 if my wife doesn't ever find a job or gets a job close enough to walk), but I just can't get there yet.

Perhaps someday I'll be able to join you at that higher level of badassity!

I am in a similar situation as many of you here, I have a BMW M3 that I don't drive much anymore.

It's uninsured and stored in a garage free of cost to me, it helps not being able to see it or storing it at home.  I think about selling it quite a bit, but for the money I'd get I don't think it will make much of a difference for me.  I don't have debt, but I could be saving more.  Still haven't decided, I always figured I'd keep it indefinitely and if it really comes down to money then I will let it go for sure, as of right now it's not necessary.

Ok, so it has been a few days and I am feeling a lot better about having sold the car... thankfully :)  I felt immediately better paying off some big ticket items that were hanging over my head.  For those who will be selling their cars soon, it does get better with time :) haha!

Hah.. I know the feeling.. I sold my 200mph cruise airplane that I spent thousands of hours building.

It flew on instruments (in clouds) and aerobatics.. gorgeous fast airplane.

It killed me to be honest.
