My husband is about as un-moustachian as you can get. While he's getting better - he admits that being out of debt is a very nice thing - he gets very emotional about money and material things. I managed to convince him to pay off our car last year, and we were planning to drive it till the wheels fell off while saving money for our next car. Well, wouldn't you know it...we got in a pretty bad wreck and it was totalled last Summer. Other driver's fault.
I wanted to buy the exact same car (I loved that car! It was a Volkswagen Jetta TDI/Diesel Wagon), but DH had his heart set on getting a nicer car, so we compromised ended up with a 3 year old BMW diesel and (ugh!) a car payment.
In spite of my husband's protests (the payment isn't that high! I want to be able to spend more money!), I started dumping every spare penny we had on that car, and today, less than a year later, it's paid off! Yeah, it is a luxurious car, but it's quite small and as a diesel it gets incredible gas mileage. And at 4 years old it will last us forever.
Now to take the car payment and start putting it toward a down payment on our next rental property.
