For all you newbie pressure cookers out there, make sure to wear a kitchen mitten or something when opening it up.  Just got a wicked steam burn, thought I'd pass this along.

You must run it under cool water until you hear it release.  Hope you are ok.  I blew the valve on one a few months back.  Soup on the ceiling, but no injuries.

I've heard newer ones shouldn't do that anymore, that older ones blew a lot.

And this is why for all the cooking I do I haven't had the courage to try pressure canning yet.

I keep a bottle of Lavender Essential oil in my kitchen as I seem to burn myself/splatter myself with hot oil on a regular basis. Lavender is one of the few essential oils that can be put on strait and takes away the burn and helps skin heal super quick. If you get it in time usually doesn't leave a mark.

I have tested this several times, the latest when I was browning a roast in hot oil and it exploded on my face. was able to apply Lavender and get back to the stove without skipping a beat.

Don't microwave an egg in its shell. My wife learned this the hard way when it exploded in her hand just after removing it.

Poke a hole and have it standing up.

Otherwise yes, the pressure inside can build up too much from being heated.
