My family is regularly getting rid of stuff by donating it to friends, bringing it to goodwill, and posting it on the local freecycle group. Although I've sold a lot on ebay and Craigslist in the past, my husband was convinced that we had nothing left of any monetary value. I decided I would take a few quick photos and see if I couldn't sell a TV and a few other pieces of electronics on Craigslist. We had been avoiding selling it because it's all stuff we use occasionally, and my husband was convinced that no one would pay what it was worth to us plus my time for listing it. I disagreed, because I knew I would be listing it well below what a new item would cost, and suspected that there were a lot of people, like us, who look to buy used. Well, after only a few minutes on Craiglist, I had multiple responses willing to pay asking price. Looks like I will be a little bit closer to FI and have a little bit less clutter soon! After years of selling stuff online, I am still surprised when things sell so easily. I am glad I took the small amount of time to make the listings.

Agreed, i have a running list of things i need to sell online, and i have unfortunatly make excuses too often, i should clean it up and make it worth more... this will sell better when the weather is nicer, ect.
I need to just post it and move on! Good luck with you selling!

I just got rid of my trumpet that has been sitting in a closet for 14 years. Ended up with $800 net in my pocket and some freed up closet space.

A friend at work told me he recently bought four washer/dryer pedestals from a guy for the scrap price ($2 each) and sold them on CL for $200/pair.

Where did you sell the trumpet? CL? Ebay? A local music store? I have an old trumpet that has been on my targeted list to sell. What kind of condition was it in?

Craigslist. The local music stores were absurdly stingy about it, the best offer I got from them was $400 (or $450 if i wanted to trade in for a "higher tier" valued instrument). It was a silver bach strad with minor pitting / some dings in it but functionally good.

The first time my wife went on a selling kick I kind of laughed to myself. I saw the stuff she was listing and didn't see any value in anything g she was selling. 2 weeks later she had $500 to deposit in the bank and we had a whole lot less cluster around the house. I've never doubted her since and have even had her sell some of my things I don't use anymore.

I found a toy Singer sewing machine in the closet that my mom bought for me at a thrift shop eons ago. Started looking on Ebay, and to my surprise, similar ones are listed for $200-260. Can't wait to see if I can get it sold for that much. I haven't felt sentimental enough about it to look at it in four years, so no need to keep it around.

Mine is definitely not a Bach (it's what I wanted though!). This is great insight. Thanks man! My first step may be taking it in to get it cleaned up a bit.
