SAVINGS FOR 2022 - CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!
« on: December 25, 2021, 11:53:14 AM »
This is for targeting a savings BALANCE amount by year-end 2022.

* Anyone can join.

*  This is different from the "Race" threads in that there is a target goal to hit by year-end that YOU set yourself.  So, plan for your year ahead, choose your adventures and with them your savings target.  Try to keep on track and most, importantly, have fun! :)

* The savings can be from any account but hopefully something that is not set-aside for dedicated use like house payment, COLA, or college expense fund.  In short, the goal is to grow the balance year  in and year out.

*  No need to update more than 1x a month.  As long as it is within the month, that is good enough as representative for that month.

* If negative add, then just put a "-" sign before the $ sign.

* My goal is to create a similar thread each year.  On the next year's thread, we will simply use the actual ending balance as beginning balance.

*  Format is simple.  Feel free to copy paste the below and change the figures and just continue downward.

Date             Beginning Balance         Added                Ending Balance              Year-End Target
202201             $    346,000          $  4,000                 $    350,000                    $    405,000

202201             $   18,000              $                          $                              $    21,900

Small goal for this year. Hopefully I can save more, but there's a lot of unknowns in the year ahead.  It works out to 150/pay check.

@Gardo , thanks for starting the new thread!

As American GenX pointed out, there's a similar thread. What do you think of merging the two? I have asked the same question of that thread's OP.

For the time being, I'm going to post in both threads, as the reporting formats are different.

Hi oneday,

I think if that has a different format, it is up to a member which format suits him/her more.  Personally, I like this format.  :D

Cool! I'm aiming this year for a beefy emergency fund.

In 2016, I had a healthy cash reserve and an anemic but respectable Net Worth. I am now recovering from a financially disastrous divorce. The main takeaway is: don't move to another country with a guy who already wants to divorce you, and don't invest half your working life in the career of someone else without securing protections for yourself.

I have $4,063 in a savings account that I'd like to see hit $19,000 by year-end. Take-home pay is just over $40k (after taxes and a 5% 401(k) contribution. I could have done it this year, but I bought a house an an amazing price (20% below appraisal) in late 2020 and spent this year taking care of a lot of necessary delayed maintenance. I made a decision to run on a low emergency fund basis for a bit to get the house sorted out to the point I could prevent bigger expenses down the road.

But after getting hit with a $2500 ER bill after a bonk on the head, I have decided I don't feel comfortable running with an emergency fund this small and I want to bring it to a level where I have my out of pocket max available, plus a couple of months replacement income.

I do have a side hustle and made an extra $2k last year without really trying or soliciting any new business. I need to expand on this.

@Lilium thank you! I am very lucky to be in the position to do that.

I don't think it will be like this every month...I just calculated what I need to have in checking for Feb, and tossed the extra into savings. So that's the accumulation of several months, at least. However, I should now be able to make steady, monthly deposits that will be larger than last year's.

I noticed your goal is $3900 this year. I'm rooting for you to find an extra $100 and get a nice round $4000! :)

Definitely will try to find that extra 100 to make an even 4k for the year.  Got a payment plan set up for the health bills, will take about 2 years to pay that off.  Received a decent tax return, put that to the car fund and mortgage.

Thanks Lilium.  I'm just perhaps the old guy in the group here as I am about to turn 50.   In that context, others would say it is average or even below.  LOL.

Wish you full recovery on your surgery.

Sorry been out for awhile.   That's okay as long as we come back here.   We know life happens.  In my case, I guess I got into the psyche of being lazy to post when the market is down due to the Russia war with Ukraine.  I think it is perfectly normal.  :)

In the same vein, the market in the past week looks like is about ready to stabilize.

Just made the normal automatic contributions in March.  This is just a cash savings account for me, so not really being hit by what's happening in Ukraine.  I am building a 12 month CD ladder at about 2500/month.  It's probably not the most financially savvy thing for me to do, but it's mentally helpful for me to know I have this as a fall back.  I had already had a 6-month saved up, and am in the process of converting those to 12 as they mature.  So, I guess I'm going to adjust my balances to reflect the CDs and cash.  Hopefully by year end, there will be 30k in CDs and 6900 in cash.

Thanks!  Actually over $1500 ahead now, I致e already saved my goal for the month of May!  I知 honestly not sure how I知 pulling it off lol.  I thought $100/day would be a hard target, but apparently I need to set a more aggressive stretch goal for this year.

Goal for saving has been upgraded by 10% from $100/day ($36,500/year) to $110/day ($40,150) for 2022, and so far (212 days in) I知 exactly on target for my upgraded goal.

This is supposed to be the year where we save less and spend more since we reached Lean FI. Instead, we are on track to save and invest the most we have ever had and we still have 4 more months to go. Our goal was to save and invest $48k across all our accounts for 2022 but are currently sitting at $73k. Part of the reason is that we are just naturally frugal and can't think of any other ways to spend our money. The other reason (and it's a big one) is that we wanted to take advantage having two high paying jobs and a down market to push us into FIRE sooner.

I知 specifically saving a down payment for a new car which I hope to take possession of circa November.  With interest rates so high now, the less interest I have to pay, the better.

That's a good reason to be saving up some money Loretta! I also have a car fund, 20$ a check and travel monies from work.  I'm hoping my little fiesta makes it at least another decade though.

I have $4,063 in a savings account that I'd like to see hit $19,000 by year-end. Take-home pay is just over $40k (after taxes and a 5% 401(k) contribution.

So, I don't think I'm going to meet this goal this year. Current balance of that account is $7,000. So, it's up, but it's not up nearly enough.

Adjusting for reality, and girding my loins and trying harder for the rest of the year, I do think I can hit $10,000.

@jsap819 if I were that close to the finish line, I would be tempted to do similar.

@Loretta @Lilium @sadiesortsitout you are doing great! I am rooting for you all to meet your targets, or at least in trying, making yourself better equipped to face whatever the future holds! :)

We are 67% of the way through the year, and I am 80% of the way to my goal. But that will likely slow down after this month, as I will max out the tax-sheltered space by month end, which means more payroll taxes, which means less disposable income. I may be able to clamp down on spending a bit, but the plan is simply to save less the rest of the year.

My stretch goal for this year is to save $100/day.  90 days in and I知 $2500 behind (saved $6500), but with some effort I might be able to get back on track in the next couple months

I really liked this chosen adventure and decided to calculate out my own status.  On track to exceed my $161/day goal by $3 per day!  Woot!

I won't be tracking daily status though, my spreadsheet is planned out monthly.

Thanks!  I知 finding it痴 keeping me more invested in making progress day to day.  I知 actually ahead of my original goal of $100/day by $8/day, but I set a new goal of $110/day to really push myself, so I知 a little behind that but I think I can make it.  I don稚 actually track it daily, but I do a quick update weekly.  Every Friday I check my accounts, do a quick total of contributions, progress made and current NW, only takes 5 minutes or so.  Have been doing that for over 5 years now, but recently been focusing more on how much I save rather than NW to help me get through the downturn without feeling like I知 going backwards.  It痴 working!

I've had overtime available for probably close to 8 years (anywhere from 16-65 hrs per check).  Starting this month we were all brought back to normal schedules 40 hrs / wk.  I absolutely enjoy having more time back, but it's quite a shock to have such low paychecks. I'm still hoping to meet my goal, I'm really not far off.  But I'm not going to stress out too much if I can't get there.

@Lilium what a good attitude; way to roll with the punches. Your savings are increasing either way.

Number is lower this month because the 401(k) was maxed out last month; this is just post-tax investments. Next month will be higher because this month was a 3-paycheck month. I waited till the end of the month to sweep the extra into investments, so it will show up next month. With that, plus my normal taxable investment amounts, I should make my goal.

Goal for saving has been upgraded by 10% from $100/day ($36,500/year) to $110/day ($40,150) for 2022, and so far (212 days in) I知 exactly on target for my upgraded goal.

At the end of Oct, I知 just a touch behind my upgraded goal of saving $110/day in 2022.  At 304 days in, I知 $515 behind, but I知 going to push hard to get back on track to meet or exceed that.  I need to save $7225 before the end of the year.

So, good news for this challenge!  I was able to catch up what I had borrowed through a little bit of overtime and an escrow refund.  I was also able to put in that extra 100$ @oneday!  There are 2 more paychecks for the year and 2 more automatic deposits of 150$, will take me to 37,000.  Yay!

End of November and I知 back on track!  I saved $4150 this month, or almost $140/day, which actually puts me back on track for the year and slightly ahead going into December. I only need to beat my original goal of $100/day for December

@JAYSLOL you can do it!

I will continue with regularly scheduled investments to taxable accounts this month. Major delay in posting this because my computer was partially broken.
