Saving on kids' clothes
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:11:29 AM »
Hi Mustachians!  This is the first forum I've ever posted on.  .  I actually make money on my kids' clothes by selling at a consignment sale.  It's called Just Between Friends.  You tag and hang all the clothes your kids have outgrown and bring them to the sale.  They take a cut depending on whether you volunteer and they take the first $10.  Last year I made $150 more than what I spent, even considering that I couldn't sell some clothes (worn out, stained).  The key is to consign because you get to shop earlier than the general public and that when the good stuff goes.  I never spend more than $5 for an outfit (pants and shirt together), and most of the time it's less than that.    I have to completely outfit a 4 yo girl for kindergarten with uniforms, pj's, etc. and I plan to spend $50-$60 and will probably make enough to cover that and buy her socks and undies.  If you have kids, it's worth the work of tagging.  jbfsale.com

Check out thredup.com for buying and selling kids clothes.  Used (but good condition and quality brands).  Also have many new with tags options.  I think very reasonably priced.

I love consignment sales too. After about size five, there is just a small selection of quality clothes for boys. I haven't had the issue with girls clothes fortunately.

I have seen this happen too -- every year, as my little guy gets older, the selection of boys' clothes diminishes :(

If you want to find a consignment sale in your area, check out www.consignmentmommies.com

Just bought a bunch of clothes for my 5 and 7 year old girls at the thrift store.  Got 12 parts (shirts, pants and jackets) for $11 and the stuff was in great condition.  The important part of this type of shopping is getting on the ball early when you have time before its a emergency.

I spend about $25 per boy per year for clothes. Granted, the younger one wears a lot of hand-me-downs. Fortunately, boy clothes seem to go out of style more slowly than girl items, so I am always shopping one year ahead. My favorite thrift store in an upscale area has 25 cent clothes days about once a month, so I hit them up then and stock up on the next size or two up. I even get their shoes from thrift stores. Boys grow so fast, it's shocking how many pairs of tags-still-on shoes I find for only a dollar or two. My almost 13 year old is currently wearing a new pair of Columbia hiking shoes I scored for $3 on a half price day. My youngest is wearing Keene sandals that were barely worn and scored for a $1 at a garage sale -- the mom had purchased them on sale in the winter, and her son outgrew them by spring. Our local Goodwill even has bags of brand new underwear and socks for $3 for six pairs. I have a very fashion conscious almost-teen, and he prefers thrifting because he can find items that none of his friends are wearing.

I guess the JBF sales vary in quality by area. I went to ours once a year or two ago and it was mainly overpriced designer toddler and baby clothing, and primarily girl stuff. I do much better thrifting.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
