SAVING FOR 2021
« on: January 02, 2021, 09:34:15 PM »
This is for targeting a savings BALANCE amount by year-end 2021.

* The savings can be from any account but hopefully something that is not set-aside for dedicated use like house payment, COLA, or college expense fund.  In short, the goal is to grow the balance year  in and year out.

* Anyone can join.

*  This is different from the "Race" threads in that there is a target goal to hit by year-end that you set yourself.  This is a different flavor than the race to a given target goal by someone else like "Race to $500K"

*  No need to update more than 1x a month.  As long as it is within the month, that is good enough as representative for that month.

* If negative add, then just put a "-" sign before the $ sign.

* My goal is to create a similar thread each year.  On the next year's thread, we will simply use the actual ending balance as beginning balance.

*  Format is simple.  Feel free to copy paste the below and change the figures and just continue downward.  Here is mine.

Date             Beginning Balance         Added                Ending Balance              Year-End Target
202101             $    267,000          $ 10,000                 $    277,000                    $    325,000

This is just my regular savings at the local CU (doesn't include car fund or dog fund savings)

Date             Beginning Balance         Added                Ending Balance              Year-End Target
202101             $    13,548            -$ 903                    $    12,646                      $    18,000
202102             $    12,646             $ 300                    $    12,947                      $    18,000
202103             $    12,947             $ 300                    $    13,247                      $    18,000

I should have started the year at 14,100, but had to take money out to work on the roof.  150$ per paycheck is put into savings - general.  I'm hoping to pay myself back by the end of the year.  I do have to take some more out for medical bills.

April was a 3 paycheck month (450$ added, but needed over 1300$ for some medical bills).  Still hopeful to get to that 18k by the end of the year.

@Gardo I appreciate this thread! I'm wary of joining some of the Race threads with a specific outcome defined. What if my realistic/reasonable target is above the thread target...will I limit myself? What if my target is below...will I be frustrated?

Going to think on this some and join starting in August.

The key is to target low but aim high.  That way when you need to adjust, it will be for the better.   I like doing somewhat mid-year adjustment of my target based on how I fared the first half.  But the fun here is when you start, it makes you think to plan ahead of what your expenses would be like for the year.  In the end, don't stress yourself.  It's intended to be just a fun thread.  If we miss the targets, we learn from it and it makes us plan better for the next year.

Very reasonable. I have decided on my savings target for Aug-Dec 2021 and set up the auto withdrawal. Feeling a bit nervous! Because I'll have to keep a closer eye on my bank account balance than in the past 5+ years. I guess I could do with a little more discipline???

This is non-tax advantaged savings only.

Hey @Gardo, I just realized you're the person who started the "Race to $10k" thread, which is one of my favorites. What fantastic progress you've made since then! If I wasn't so damn busy right now, it would be fun to go back and see how the other members of that club have fared. Maybe when things settle down...

@Gardo @Lilium how are you doing? Year end will be here before you know it...hope all is progressing according to plan!

Non-tax advantaged savings only.

October was three paychecks. Just today I checked on how much extra I felt I could send to investments. This was always the plan...get the extra paycheck, then see where things stand. Well color me surprised at the amount of cash I'd stacked up! That's the equivalent of three paychecks. I'll have to decide if I want to increase the amount invested out of each paycheck. That's this week's assignment.

October was a 3 paycheck month and we also paid off our deck, so I had some extra that I could add also.  In the middle of yet another health thing, but hopefully I can cash flow that instead of taking out of savings.

Dicey,  congrats on FIRE staratus!  Yes, I was the one one who created the starting $10K.  I quickly graduated from it but really my purpose then was to encourage others to start and be separated from the bigger savers threads.  There is a psychological factor to it.  Thanks for the feedback.

Lillum/oneday, am doing well.  Market has been on phenomenal run and that helped push my balance to reach goal.  I can see you are both close to your respective goals as well!  Go for it.

Another thing I started this decade particularly this year is a crypto account.  I just dipped my toenails (LOL) on it and began buying assortment to a tune of $100/month.  I will continue next year with my plan this time increasing to $200/month.  This is an experiment really, or a bet if you will, of whether a crypto account will do better than a 529 college account for my kids.  So 1 is in 529 and the other is in crypto.  :)

Btw Holidays is upon us.. it has a way of screwing our budget for expenses. so be careful.  :)

Lillum, happy to see you've paid your deck.

Wishing all of us good health.  Health is wealth.

Gardo, well done beating your goal!

Can I make a suggestion for next year's thread? I'd love to get a few more people in with us, if nobody minds. Maybe a snazzier title? SAVINGS FOR 2022 - CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE! or something. But, no worries if that's not appealing. This is your idea, not mine :)

Non-tax advantaged savings only.

May as well update while I'm here....

So we had some bad news at work where they'll be shutting down 2 of 3 lines (beverage manufacturing).  I had been putting extra to the mortgage but I've stopped for now and am setting that aside for any potential problems once we know what the fall out is going to look like.  I did take November's extra and put it into savings to get to my goal, thinking that would at least set my mind at ease a little.

Good luck to everyone on this journey!  I'll have to figure out goals for next year sometime soon :)
