My wife has a 08 Camry 118k miles. Been a reliable car but last week her gauges went crazy and a/c stopped working. Being in Florida this needed to be fixed quick. Took to mechanic was going to cost $3,000+ to replace the ABS control module. I did a little research and found a used party online with a warranty for $250 and I found another mechanic that installed for $112…I could have done the job myself but I would have to purchase computer program to flush the ABS module so just let the mechanic deal with it. Got car back yesterday and so far its running perfect.

I think it's more fair to say you avoided being scammed out of $2,700.
$3,000 for almost any auto repair task short of a full engine rebuild or heavy collision damage is batshit insane. A mechanic spewing such a nonsense estimate is a scammer trying to take advantage of people who simply don't know anything about cars or repairs.

Well not really because the part is over $1,900 new I confirmed with the dealer. I am afraid to find out how much a dealership would have charged me for the job. I did find in the process a great new mechanic that is close and has very good rates.

Oh, I didn't realize the part was almost $2k alone. That partially explains it. But $1100 labor and markup is still completely bonkers. In the end: good on you for doing the research before whipping out the credit card on a ridiculous expense.

I know and its so small..figured for that price I could get a new motor almost.
Todays cars the electronics when they break can get super expensive.
The labor is a ripoff it was only a two hour job at most so 1,100 for that is insane.
