Save ridiculous amounts of money on your college textbooks
« on: October 24, 2015, 11:17:27 AM »
My great friend (who I really should convince to join this site) was very excited to show me this awesome site. I just took a look at it today and wow, I search a random book and that price went from $67 to $6.7. A 90% discount.

The second book I found went from $104 to $1.8. A 99% discount!

And finally, if you search Business Research Methods, 7th edition, the price went from $443 to $0.01. A 99.99% DISCOUNT!!

Here it is: www.slugbooks.com

Thanks RLI.  I just checked out the site using the ISBN from one of my daughter's current textbooks.  Your site found a great price...less than 25% of what I paid after searching online myself. Thanks!

no offense by why would I take the advice of a 17 year for textbooks?

Because people should be receptive to all advice, but judge their worthiness by themselves after considering its validity, not the age of the person who told you.

no need to get snarky, my dear.
I think he was a lot less "snarky" than you were.

Yup. That was a pretty good response from RLI.

Darn, a little too late. I'm a senior now. Hopefully I'll be able to save on textbooks for my last semester. Thanks for the link.

Exactly.  A 17 year old who is being careful about book costs, and sharing?  Bravo!

Why are you being so disrespectful? This is a great community for conversation between all ages and generations. Please don't try to stifle that and then cover it up with condescension. I assure you that the 17 year old isn't the one appearing immature here.

Because I clicked on the site and it's actually useful.  I've been looking for a field guide to identify trees when I hike.  Can't use the library for this.  This site brings up some (finally) competition to Amazon.  Bravo and thanks

Thank you, RLI.  I have some books just sitting around and I found out they're worth a little money.  I'll also be checking this site out for next semester.

I haven't had to buy a textbook since 1996.  And that was, let's be honest, pretty much pre-internet days.

So yes, I would absolutely take advice on "how to buy a textbook in the internet age" from a 17 year old.  I'm sure things will change between now and 9 years from now when my eldest starts college.

But I'll be taking advice from 17-20 year olds then too.

It's been longer than that since I needed college textbooks, though I have two college students of my own now, and I have helped them locate books.

Some things about being a college student are tougher today than they were for us, but books isn't one of them.  I had only two sources for textbooks when I was in school:  The school bookstore and bulletin boards (meaning actual cork boards with push pins and notes from other students).

Thanks! I've been lucky to have been able to avoid having to buy textbooks to date, but when I do, will definitely check this site out.

Another option is using google you can locate free pdf versions with this:

Type into google:
"filetype:pdf Title Author etc"

Example
"filetype:pdf Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing Groover"

I went to college pre-internet days.  I saved a ton of money taking textbooks out of the college library.

Buy your textbooks at the end of the semester, and sell your books at the start of the next semester. But low, sell high. Use Amazon. Consider purchasing the previous version or the international version.

Another website similar to the one the original poster gave is http://used.addall.com/

In fact, once I found a book on addall.com for $20 and later sold it on Amazon for about $80 after I was done with it.
