What's the highest your net worth has jumped in one day?
« on: March 28, 2019, 06:35:21 PM »
This could be an interesting thread.

Me:
Dec 26, 2018

Job - (380$ - 30% effective tax rate - 50% average savings rate) = Net worth gain of 133$
Mutual fund/stocks = Net worth gain of 215$

A total net worth increase of 348$ for one day!

You might want to exclude periodic or one-off bonus payments.

I don't update stock prices every day in my accounting software so it's difficult to find the best day exactly. But I'm pretty sure it should be in the $15-20k+ range.

Nov 29, 2015.  $96,000, if we're not counting inheritances.    That was the difference between what our new home appraised for and what we paid for it.

2015 was a good year financially.   We finished renovating 2 properties with a $30k bump each.  Plus we maxed out our 401Ks  at the over-50 rate, and of course got an employer contribution, too.   Plus we saved a whole bunch and invested it in Vanguard.  Our net worth when up more that year than we actually earned in gross income that year by a lot.

Question covers alot of ground.

The biggest jump was when we sold our paid for house and downsized and banked 350k. Also when I sold My paid for Cabin for 335k. I never considered or had them in my NW but definately was a big part of being able to fire.

Market moves I have had numerous 30k days but that goes both ways and I am sure some bigger.

I'm sure for me it was the day about six years ago when my employer at the time had an IPO. I didn't make an nine-figure amount like the founders, but it was a very nice payday even as employee number 300-ish.

Of course, as the market giveth, the market taketh away. The biggest one-day drop I had was probably when that same company announced some earnings below market expectations a couple of years later, and the stock lost half its value overnight. I had been gradually selling it off prior to that in order to spread the tax bill out over a few years, so it wasn't the whole amount, and even after the drop it was still quite a bit above my strike price, but it still stung a bit.

Pretty regularly get ~$15k swings in net worth with the current "highly" volatile market. When it's on the negative side, it's bittersweet because $15k is a boat load to us still, but it's also still only a small amount of our total.

About $57k one day at the end of last year.  All from market gains for the day.

I'd say lottery winnings count.  Did you win the lottery?

No.  I've only purchased a couple of lottery tickets and I realized that buying them tends to make me manic.  I find myself buying steak instead of hamburger.   I have always felt like a lucky person, but "regular" luck is worthless against 50,000,000 to 1 odds!  lol

It's good to realize that lotteries are for fools who want to voluntarily pay taxes.  I can remember when one big prize was up for grabs.  Some MIT mathematician said hitting the winning number was about the same odds as walking down Mass Ave in front of MIT and the first person you meet has your same first.....and last name.  Then the second one you meet has your first.....and last name.  Then, as you get near the Charles River, a shark jumps out and bites you on the leg.

Well, maybe I 'win' if the following 'counts'...I ran a solo business on a cash accounting basis that dealt in large projects where I would usually not receive payment until a couple of months after the end of it.  I think the largest single check I received was close to $400k, so given I accounted on a cash basis and that business was wholly mine maybe my net worth increased $400k that day?

Of course, I probably paid out over $250k in expenses on the project in chunks by then, so if this counts I probably also win on net worth loss in a day as well......

The day I sold a house and moved into a rented apartment was one big day.  But I gained a monthly rent on liability side...   And sadly, the day I received an inheritance was another big day.  That's not the way I wanted my net worth to increase.

None of the amounts above, however, compare to the amount gained by day-in, day-out frugality combined with maximizing income and practiced for years and years.

Did something clever at work and got my fixed salary pumped a fair bit. Over the years it means a lot. Especially since a few benefits (employer pension contributions etc) are calculated off annual salary.

There have been so many days that have been unsually advantageous.  Some have been politically motivated, others have be hereditary.  It doesn't really matter until you cash out, right?

Just consider the days that you're unaware of that could have had a huge impact, one way or the other, but didn't.

It's a long ride. ;)

I remember looking at my accounts during one of the days with a big market run-up and seeing an increase of about $15,000. I don’t check them regularly though, and I only track twice a year, so I don’t know if there was a bigger day that I missed.

I don't know the answer, but reminds me of the time my mother-in-law was smugly flashing a fist full of $100 bills from winning $2,700 at the casino like I should be super impressed.  She was baffled that my eyes didn't bug out of my head.  All I could think was "Meh, I made $15k in the market today"
