Rusted gaz tank repair - the cheap way

Hyundai Accent 2007, with about 100,000 miles

The car is in decent shape with only few rust spots

Lattely, gaz tank began to rust arround the filling neck...like, if I fill it to much, it smell a bit and I can see where it comes from but no dripping at all. When tank is 7/8 or lower, everything is normal!

This car worth 1,000$ (max) and the repair is 500-800$ (depends what will break appart when doing the job) 😳

I cleaned the area with a degreasser and sprayed 2 coats of Leak-Seal (Rustoleum) and it seams to work. Dont know if gaz will get through over time...

Dont tell me that gaz is flamable or anything of that sort, I know very well about that! Just cant find this product resistance to chemical and gaz, especialy over months/years

The plan was to keep this car for another 3 years

Although I'm sure you could get a tank cheaply enough from a junkyard, right?

Unfortunatly, most junkyards perform a hole at the bottom of the tanks to empty all of them completly...

I managed to find a used one anyway but for 275$ and a new one for 360$. The thing is, every bolts, bracket and hoses are rusted/fragile and will break doing the job... Each of these pieces also cost a lot and are not easy to find. Even the dealership have to order them when they need it!

I am not a mechanic but did pretty much any kind of job on my cars (and other’s) over 30 years and I know when it’s gonna be a PITA from the begining (even today, my optimist nature still makes me underestimate the task from time to time;)

I applied 3 coats of Leak-Seal and it looks fine for now. I will have a look monthly and try not to fill more than 7/8

A 30 second google search tells me gasoline dissolves leak-seal and other similar rubbers.

Sorry, improper repairs on mechanical/safety critical components are not badass.

Given where the repair is located it might last a little while but in the future I'd suggest looking for something like JB weld, Permatex, RedKote, POR15, etc. as they all make permanent sealers of various types that are safe for fuel tanks.
