Rode my bike to Post Office and Library
« on: November 03, 2015, 01:48:02 PM »
Ok, so this may not seem like much to nearly everyone here, but in the last 8 months of so since moving across the country I have been a lazy fat-ass. No excuses. I blamed it on the altitude (moved to 8,000ft), the insane hills each direction, but it boils down to laziness.

Today I had errands to run and instead of firing up the fossil fuel burner I threw on a backpack and spun for 15 miles. It felt so good that I quickly felt stupid for being so lazy. Cycling is not only the healthier option it makes you feel like you actually accomplished something when your tasks are as mundane and picking up your mail and grabbing a new book!

I've been a fair weather cycle commuter for years, but today is the first time I've riden my bike to work while off Daylight Saving Time. So far, I'm still planning on riding transit in case of wind or rain, but I'm going to work on not letting cold (for my area anyway) stop me from riding this year.

Congratulations!

I just started biking again too.  That first trip is the hardest!

There was a time when I didn't own a car and bike commuted year round through frigid Iowa winters. How far I have fallen, but I'm determined to come back strong!

Good work and keep it up! Once you've done it once, you've proven that it can be done, and now you have no excuses.

Congrats... I too recently had my own conversion.

I do a lot of DIY home improvement and am often going to my local Ace Hardware. It's not as cheap as buying stuff online, but if you only need to buy ONE 17 cent screw or something, you can't beat it. I started feeling pretty stupid driving to and from a store one mile away to buy pennies worth of stuff.

Yesterday, I needed to replace a driver bit... one of those square ones for pocket hole screws. So I fished out some coins from my truck's cup holder, then closed the truck and hopped on my bike. In only 10 total minutes more than the motorized round trip would have taken, I had my new driver bit and had gotten in a nice short workout too. Felt awesome when I got back.

Small victory... but I am so doing more of this!!

Still need to fossil-burn my way to work, but that should change next year after work relocates me; we will find a home in a much more mustachian location.

Congrats! Amazing how much of a difference a little biking makes.

I sold my car and moved to the city several months ago - the past 3 months of commuting solely by bike have been awesome! I hope I never have to go back to driving on a regular basis.

Cycling for commuting transportation was almost nil 20 years ago, and now it is up to about 5% in several places.  Even frigid places like Chicago and Minneapolis are biking towns now.  It is about to reach a cultural critical mass.  At 10%, it is thought, it will become "mainstream" and accepted as routine....it will take a while, but it is coming.
