Rode my bike home tonight, 13 miles
« on: June 04, 2014, 05:28:08 PM »
I used to cycle commute often to work but my current work location is 13 miles (was 8 miles).   I really need to drop 50 lbs and get back into shape so I'm starting now.    I rode one of my bikes (my hobby is riding and repairing/selling bikes) home tonight.   The first 4 miles was in the rain until I got out from under the storm clouds path.   Within the first half mile, a guy in a pickup truck yelled something to the effect of "get of the damn road" as he passed.   Apparently my turning left with traffic when the light changed to green slowed him down about 5 seconds.

I'm beat and have to ride back to work in the morning to pick up my car.

took the bike home even though you probably knew it would rain.  Pretty sure you got this.

Awesome! You will have this down in no time, just hope you get a good night's rest tonight! Just ignore the pickup guy, and check out www.cyclingsavvy.org for some inspiration. These days my typical commute ride is 15 miles one-way, and after 3 years of ramping up to this it feels totally normal to do this 5 days/week (and run errands by bike on the weekends).

The return trip to work was tiring but the weather was nice and I enjoyed the ride.   I hope to repeat next week.

Congrats!

I tried this for the first time this week as well. My commute is 28 miles one way. No need for face-punches since my face is already bruised from self-punches. Hopefully this situation will resolve itself in one or two years after hitting full-FI. I do live in a cool place, so it softens the blows. But I digress...

So this past week I finally did the whole drive-my-car-to-work-with-bike thing and rode my bike home after work. Then rode in the next morning. I did it on my hybrid which doesn't have a great seat, so I definitely felt it.

For this first trip, I only rode 20 miles and took a bus for another portion. I hope to try this next on my road bike with a more comfy seat and higher speeds and skip the whole bus-in-the-middle thing. Let's see how that works out.

It did feel great to make it in to work the next morning knowing I had knocked out 40 miles on a bike over the last two days.

I started riding my bike to and from work a couple of months ago. It's about 4-5 miles one way, 15 to 20 minutes on the bike. The first thing I noticed was that I was in much better shape. I was never in bad shape, but when you're over 40. . . . . Then I noticed that my clothes were getting bigger. I figure I've lost a  couple of inches around the waist (never had many to lose to begin with) without even trying. No change in diet, eating habits, etc. I can recommend riding your bike to work for anyone who wants to lose weight or get fitter.

Great job! I want to do this also - I looked at this post because my job is also a 13 mile commute, and I want to try a bicycle commute at least once or twice a week. Are you planning on doing a regular bike commute?
