Received a letter from the utilities department
« on: June 06, 2013, 09:36:59 PM »
Actually, this is the third one I get, congratulating me because I'm using 40% less electricity than my "efficient" neighbors.

There's a comparison chart:

Me: 341 kWh
"Efficient" Neighbors: 572
All neighbors: 887

Badass?

You guys are both pretty badass. I'm in The Netherlands and use 164 kWh per month :-)

I do, however, have a USD$ 107 monthly bill for natural gas (used for heating) :-)

164 (kilowatt hours per month) = 224.50856 watts

If it's more than a one-person household, who you're sharing with really matters. I share a two-bedroom apartment.

Last winter's bill, with a housemate who uses an electric heater: 5.34kwh/day or 163kwh/month.

The winter before, with another housemate, who doesn't use an electric heater: 0.87kwh/day or 27kwh/month. (That seems ridiculously low - other quarters that year were still low, between 2 - 3kwh/day or 60 - 90kwh/month, but still more than double that, don't know what happened.)

So yeah, I'm probably pretty badass, but my current housemate isn't. ;)

Yes, badass.  Ignore the toppers in this thread.  :)

I think marty wins, if his is quarterly.  My last billing cycle (a 1 month period) was 179 kwh.  My average for the past year is 201 kwh/mo.

It totally varies based on your living conditions.  I have one of the smallest, based on the "what's your home like" thread - about 400 sqft.  And there's only two of us.  Naturally someone in a 2000 sq. ft. home with 5 people will use more.  Naturally someone in an RV will use less.

Another thing is that most of you probably are on municipal water systems, while I have a well.

good job!  my 'true' usage is around 350kw/hrs as well [no AC area] but I normally offset that with about ~250kw/hrs PV sold back to the grid depending on the time of year. Also my neighbor put up a 2nd story so I get a little bit more shade in the afternoons, ugh. I noticed the utility company acts a bit strange if you're a net 'seller' consistently so I undersized my array a bit
as long as you dont have an electric clothes dryer and things like that ~350-400 kw/hrs is pretty easy [if you arent running AC] imo

Of course! When I lived in a one bedroom apartment my electric bills were $15~$20 a month, I do not have any of those bills, but I'm assuming I was using less than 200 kWh.

Well done!

Y'all made me look.  Mine was 771 kWh this month.  Not badass at all.  Big house, fish and lizard tanks, electric dryer, AC for the hot southern US.  Sigh.

Quite badass, my friend. It's pretty cool that they send you a letter too.

I'm jealous! My last quarter was 453 kwh. I'm all-electric and have a clothes washer in the apartment, though. Getting it below this seems to require turning off the water heater during the day, and I'm usually too forgetful and end up leaving it on or with a very cold shower.

Not to thread jack, but I must be doing something crazy and I'm not sure what.

My usage for the last two month period (my utilities bill bi-monthly) was ~1200kwh. That's about 600kwh per month. But I only have a 1300sq ft house and haven't used the AC at all. I also have gas stove, and dryer so I'm not sure why I'm using so many kwh.

Inefficient appliances?  Still, with gas for a lot of them... hmm.

Here's one thing you can do: plug in your appliances into the Kill-a-Watt to determine how much energy they're using and see which stuff is sucking up your power (TV, etc.)

Best part?  Most local libraries let you check one out for free!

I use about 290kwh a month, but I have gas everything (which goes down below $30 a month during the summer months). I love looking at the chart that shows what I use and what the average person uses. My neighbor for example has been running their central AC since half way through may, meanwhile we have only used our ac 3-4 days. Ceiling fans are amazing!

Ours is way too expensive. Averaging 500+kwh/month.

4 months of running the AC brings us up a lot. :-/

Estimated from measuring one day and adding up to the month:
Fridge: 36kwh
PC: 15kwh
Aquarium: 20kwh
TV set: 6kwh
Cooking: 10kwh
Lights: 3kwh

adds up to 90 kwh

I actually used 166kwh, but there are still things in there which I did not measure.
One person, 51 m³

//EDIT: I should add: I'm more on the spendy side of eletricity around here, mostly due to owning an old fridge, an not so new pc and a big 47" TV
