Repaired hardwood floors damaged by high heel shoes
« on: September 02, 2015, 10:55:55 AM »
We hosted my wife's 30th birthday party at our home.  While most guests removed their shoes, one in particular did not and she was wearing high heel shoes with a rather large problem.  The little rubber cap at the bottom of the heel had worn out, exposing the small nail.  We had hundreds of small indentations all over our floors - throughout the entire house.  It was a flipping disaster.

I initially thought about refinishing the floors, but couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money.  My father, who always seems to have some strange trick up his sleeve, provided an interesting solution: iron the floor.

Wood expands when wet.  A needle is used to poke each indentation with several small holes so water can penetrate the floor’s finish and be absorbed into the wood.  A damp towel covers the spot and serves to both protect the finish and act as a water delivery vehicle.  An iron set to high is applied to the towel and generates copious amounts of steam, and the compressed wood begins to expand and lift.

I ironed about 800 square feet of hardwood floor, which was a monumental task.  It absolutely worked and the results were terrific.  While I wouldn't recommend this strategy for a large area to repair, it is perfect if you drop a dish or tool and have an isolated ding or dent in wood floor or furniture.

I did outline the horrors of this debacle in more detail in a post I wrote a couple of weeks ago, but the gist of it is included here in case you have some damaged wood you want to tackle on your own.

Thanks for the info.  I wonder if this approach also works on dents in a table.

Maybe your huest could pay for the professional refinishing of the floor.

Yeah, I wish...unfortunately, it was my wife's coworker and wouldn't make for very good working relationship.  It works on all wood.  You have to be careful about the finish of the table though.  Sometimes it can cause a haze to develop.  I would try it on an inconspicuous spot first if possible.  My floors are a lighter colored oak, so even if a haze were to have developed, it wasn't visible.  I would have tested the floors in the closet first if I had darker floors.

We actually have hazy spots on the table from water on the table.  An iron applied to the wood removes the haze.  Great DIY info!  Thanks.

We actually have a dent in our floor from dropping a copper ball (only an inch in diameter, but solid copper is heavy).  I'll have to try this!

It will be a lot easier to fix an isolated dent from dropping a single item than what I had to deal with.  I probably spent well over 15 hours on my hands and knees fixing the floors.  As mentioned earlier, it's advisable to test in an inconspicuous location to ensure the floor finish isn't affected.

Oh, there was so much cussing and much arguing with the wife about calling the lady out.  I thought she needed to let her know so she didn't trash somebody else's house.

This is great to know about. This has caused hundreds of holes in our floor as well. Maybe I can fix it. Sounds really tedious though.

I am glad you posted this. My old apartment had pine floors (very soft) and I did this before I moved out - floors looked perfect!

How long does this take to do? I have maybe 200 sq ft that needs it.

It is a tedious process and is typically best reserved for situations like a dropped tool or toy that causes a single dent.  It worked on the hundreds of holes across my entire main floor, though.  It's hard to say how long it would take for 200 holes, as it depends on how spread out they are.  First test an inconspicuous area to ensure the finish does not change with the heat/steam.  Once that's established tackle a few holes and see how that goes.  If you like the results, you can invest more time with the rest spread out over several evenings/weekends.  I am too anal retentive to do that and went hog wild and attacked it practically non-stop.

It's tedious, but hard to say. I had dents scattered around (shoes, dropping things, etc.), not large amounts of the floor damaged. For deeper dents I had to go over them multiple times. Maybe a couple of hours for 200sq ft?
