Refurbishing cabinets
« on: August 13, 2013, 10:34:17 PM »
Our 25 year old oak kitchen cabinets are good quality, and we still like the style, but the finish was getting worn, especially near the sink (water is evil).  No way did I want to buy new cabinets, so I talked myself into refurbing these.

So now I'm working my way around the room, taking off the doors, sanding them, touching up the stain if needed, then brushing on 1-3 thin layers of polyurethane (depending on the wear).  They're looking pretty good.  Oh, how I wish I'd done the worst of them earlier (sink base, I'm looking at you), but I'm probably the only one who will notice.

Since I'm having so much fun (er, sort of), I also ordered new brushed nickel pulls and hinges to replace the old bright brash pulls and antique brass hinges ($83 for 24 pairs of hinges and 34 pulls!)  The hinges are the same size and shape, but have two smaller screws into the edge of the box instead of one big one, so that's going to make the two doors over the fridge interesting to install.

The hardest part is drilling all those pilot holes.  Or maybe it's holding the door in place while attempting to drive the screws.

I'm afraid next I'm going to want to strip the wallpaper in the downstairs half bath.  And then there's a lot of repainting to be done.  Plus what's left of the original carpet really needs replacing, but that requires some tile work in the upstairs bath...   Hmmm...  Renting's starting to sound good.
