This totally stunned me
« on: August 28, 2015, 07:07:19 AM »
So I had a training at work this week with various people in my field from around the state. At lunch, I was just biting into my sandwich when one of them said, "Hey, you know how you told me about Mint? Well, that's how my husband was able to quit his job and stay home with our kid." I looked at her, totally surprised! I knew her husband quit his job earlier this year to stay home with their young son (via Facebook), but I had no idea that I helped influence that scenario in any way.

Turns out she had fairly recently gotten an iPhone when I saw her last time in person, and she was asking for app tips, and I mentioned how I'm kind of obsessive about money and how I like to use Mint every day to see what's going on. So she and her husband started using it, seeing everything laid out, and realized how much money was being used for things related to both of them working while having a young child (and another on the way--very happy for them, they seem like awesome parents)--things like gas, daycare, meals out because both were too stressed and had no time to cook, etc. So now her husband is able to stay home with their soon-to-be two little boys, and their oldest is thriving and loving it (what little boy wouldn't love staying home to play with dad all day?). All because I jabber on and on about finances. :)

Nice! Almost no one listens to me when I tell them about how to be richer or have a better life :)

I had a similar experience last night.  I had a friend over after work for drinks and we were talking about retirement and I started yammering on about the ACA, premium credits, and early retirement budgeting.  Health insurance is the big barrier standing in their way to retirement.  She was under the impression that they would be experience rated, not be able to get insurance at all, or kicked off.  "Nope, that's illegal now."  Then I drew her a bunch of scenarios on paper, got out a blank copy of the 1040 (I'm an accountant.  What can I say??) and walked her through it.

I referred her to a friend who sells ACA policies.  Then sent her a bunch of links this morning to good retirement books.

She was shocked.  And very happy.  And told her husband right away when she got home.

I kind of did--she said working on retirement is next after their children are a bit older. So there's hope--I do blog about finances and so she knows we paid off our student loans already, and she definitely seemed curious about that, so there's real hope for this young family. :)

That's awesome, Trudie!! So cool. Think of the freedom you have given them. It's just wonderful!

I've had only slightly better luck evangelizing Mustachian values than Linux. I'll not soon forget some of the facial expressions of disgust I got in return to the words, “the idea is to live well below your means and save the rest”.

I've been able to get a few people to save a little each month by telling them to get their own modem so they don't have to rent one from TWC for $8 a month. (The modem I use only cost $23 from amazon.com)

I've gotten 3 people so far.  Hopefully this can be the start of something big for each of them!

Rubybeth, you are amazing!
No one listens to me at all.  My coworkers get new, fancy stuff all the time.  However, I finally (it's been a year)  convinced my DH to cancel DirecTV, we have a new digital antenna.  My coworker thought it was cool, but she will probably keep her cable.   This one has had their house in foreclosure for eight years, so hasn't had to pay rent in eight years, and now will be forking out $1400 per month in a low COL area.

I am still thinking about this, a week later. I think what made the difference was that it was a question she asked me, and I wasn't just randomly spouting off financial wisdom apropos of nothing. ;) She had asked me for app suggestions, because she saw me using my iPhone, and it was an opportunity to tell her about an app I like--with no mention of how she should use it, or any judgement. I just got to say how much I love it, and why, and that must have resonated with her and been interesting enough to check it out.

So I'm going to continue to look for those opportunities to share information without judgement. It also likely helps that I'm in a field where sharing information is a key component of what we do--I work for a public library. :)

Nice!  I have been talking about Roth IRAs forever to my nieces.  I was finally able to get one of them to start investing monthly.  I am still working on the other one.

I plan to offer matching to those younger than me to start them.  Obviously more for my own child vs neices/nephews but some for all.  Especially since I doubt their parents will do much in this arena.

Nice!!  It sounds simple but most people don't think of the equation:

If  (Daycare + Gas + Related BS)  > (Lowest of the two salaries)  Then
   Somebody should probably stay home
End If

But you would have to use something like Mint or track very carefully to find out what something like daycare is really costing you in total.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
