I do feel a bit guilty ERing at 45, but I have worked 30 years full time, the first five of which most of my friends were still in school or living the high life as a young adult.

Interesting, I've often though exactly the same thing, as I started working very young and had kids very young.  Sometimes I feel I have to justify wanting an early retirement by comparing my life with others.  Trying to prove that I've worked longer or harder, or missed out on some partying early in life.

Why do we have to justify our actions like that?  Funny how others can make us feel guilty for making great financial decisions.

I'm hoping for a day when the people who CAN'T retire at 45 feel guilty for spending too much and making poor financial choices.

Congratulations on a well deserved early retirement, thoroughly earned by your careful financial planning and frugality.  May you never feel guilty reaping your rewards.

HUGE congrats!!! I'm going to be you when I grow up into a 46 year old.  Or maybe a 44 year old, if I do really well in the next 10 years!  Or maybe even less if I can really ramp up my badassity!

Thanks for all the well wishes. Day 1 and I've taken my dogs for a long walk, taking in a couple of property auctions for free entertainment along the way. Total cost $0 and the feeling is priceless!

Re guilt, that mainly came up for me from my MIL's attitude about it a few months ago when I announced my ER intentions. She's an old school catholic, so after a bit of research it is possible that that ER equated to "sloth" in seven deadly sins parlance in her mind. Fast forward to now and she seems to have come around, calling me up yesterday and congratulating me for "earning" my change of life. She seemed to mean it, so all is good in the family circle!
