Average net worth gain (reduced debt / mortgage, increased savings and retirement funds)

Past 87 months (since home purchase): $1940/month
Past 39 months (last stupid! car purchase): $3122/month
Past 12 months (includes car downgrade): $4226/month

I like the track I'm on!

My overall net worth including mortgage, savings/investments and retirement funds is now $5,465. (Just went positive between June and July.)
If I let my house offset my mortgage, and conservatively use the purchase price as current value, I'm at $161,365!

Nice work.  Ad a little income and ad a little expense reduction each month and FI is coming quick!

Update 3 months later:

Past 90 months (since home purchase): $2006/month
Past 42 months (last stupid! car purchase): $3222/month
Past 12 months (includes car downgrade ): $4806/month

Those numbers are going up! Got a big freelance check from a summer project recently which helps! Hoping (planning) to continue to accelerate going forward. (Though I currently need to find replacement tenants for some vacancies.)

New net worth including mortgage, savings/investments and retirement funds: $19,040
(With purchase price of house: $174,940)

I have not kept great records except from earlier this year so the periods are a bit strange but:

Past 76 months: $1261.38/month (since starting being full time employed)
Past 35 months: $1535.93/month
Past 21 months: $1768.96/month
Past 8 months: $2554.48/month (since starting to track growth in 'net worth')

Thanks Neo. Not quite up to your standard yet but working on it.

I like this as a metric to visualize progress. It does a good job of ironing out the ups and downs while still showing you progress over the years. I am hoping to get closer to the 3k/month mark over the next 12 months. I will try to remember to report back in a few months.

I'm inspired to dig up some net worth increase numbers for this topic:

Past 99 months (since wife and I first moved in together and I started keeping records): $3812/month
Past 86 months (since house purchase): $4138/month
Past 63 months (since wedding): $5039/month
Past 22 months (since seriously committed to ER): $7803/month

Really helps put the acceleration in perspective! Thanks!

Yes - awesome acceleration there! I'm hopeful I see some of the same. My girlfriend and I seem to (mostly) be on the same page about things going forward, and we've shared our budgets and put together a theoretical budget for when we move in together that would be really nice!

No, that's combined. If it were separate, we'd probably be almost ER by now! We're lucky that we both have good jobs (I'm in software, she's a teacher). We pull in about $100k after taxes and save 70% of that.

Mt SO an I probably bring in similar after tax but only save 55ish%.  We still treat our finances independently.

That's a neat idea, to look at the acceleration.

I'd calculate mine, but real estate appreciation has done stupid things to my net worth, so it's pointless.

But I love the concept!  :)

Great idea, I love this view so much!  Here's mine, last x months and corresponding average monthly increase:

12    8,818
24    8,534
36    7,285
48    6,034
60    5,373
72    5,063
84    4,909
96    4,851
108    4,790

Not too shabby at all!  My salary is 85K, DH is a SAHD, but works at a coffee shop very part time for $8.50/hr,  So we are not quite a 1 income family, but we also don't have big-time two-earner income.  Current NW for month ended Nov14 is $567K.  Goal for the year was $570K, so we are looking good!

Update 4 months later:

Past 94 months (since home purchase): $2027/month
Past 46 months (last stupid! car purchase): $3160/month
Past 12 months (includes car downgrade ): $4325/month

Overall 94 month average up slightly but the other averages are down a bit. Why? Well - big travel expenses in January for a big trip my S.O. and I are taking this July. Plus... my 401k contributions from 12 days ago still haven't shown up! Once those hit as well as pay/401k next week, things will look better.

Been a while, but here's an update...

Past 102 months (since home purchase): $2135
Past 12 months (d'oh, me and cars): $3475
Past 3 months (oh marriage!):  $6009

So I bought a car in July, and I don't count the value of my car (or house) in calculations. Then I got married and we combined finances which was net positive.

Never thought of doing this, very interesting.  I did it by year, but I won't list them all, just enough to highlight the great progress we have made! almost all is due to stock market gains and increasing income.  Some is due to increasing savings, but we already did pretty good saving so most of the gain is due to increasing income (passive and active).

2005 (first year in my spreadsheet) = 1680/month avg net gain

2006 = 3260/month

2007 = 4952/month

2008 (stock market drop I think) = -2295/month (yes, that is minus avg net gain = loss)

then gradual recovery until booming market again

2012 = 8700/month

2013 =10,759/month

2014 = 12,356/month

2015 = 9,693/month (less income this year and stock market down.  :(   fyi, I run my year from Oct to Oct, so 2015 is done for my spreadsheet)

Gross, my numbers have totally changed.  My last 12 months is lower than the last 9 years' average.

Last x Months/Avg Monthly Increase
12        4,109
24        5,961
36        6,419
48        6,212
60        5,366
72        4,871
84        4,689
96        4,620

That's awesome! I recently went back to school and now moved 3000km. So over the last 5.5 years I'm actually at about net 0. I do keep meticulous records though and my best month was +$3229.

Past 106 months (since home purchase): $2573
Past 12 months (d'oh, me and cars, oh but marriage!): $6327
Past 3 months (buying a house, but not quite yet):  $8684

The past year has been really good! Next month (April) we'll lose a big bunch to closing costs, and this net worth software has never included real estate in the past. So the new mortgage will take me very negative, so I'll just set a goal to get back positive (even without real estate values!)

This is interesting.  Just going on my personalcapital page....

2016: So far I've averaged +$3,625 in net worth each month, although I've been investing and paying down principal to the tune of $8,600 a month.  NOT COOL, market/condo value.
2015: I averaged +$7,928 in net worth monthly.
2014: I averaged +$7,246 in net worth monthly.
2013: I averaged +$2,500 in net worth monthly (but have imperfect data, so not sure that's reliable.)

This year I'm actually hoping for 12*$8,600 + a one time investment/debt pay-off of ~$40,000, which would put me at $11,769 monthly (very backended, though).  In 2017 I'd like to be closer to $14,000 monthly, but I may be changing jobs and or paying a nanny by then, so who knows.

Great job!

What's your CAGR?

Ha I don't even know how to begin to calculate that. I'm mostly fortunate to make a good income, and to marry a woman who makes a good income. I've made plenty of mistakes, and I'm really only starting to get into solid accumulation now (like... this month). I have $154k in investable assets right now, and about $555k in real estate ($160k is a rental property generating income.) $435k in debt - vast majority is mortgages (3.375% and 3.75%).

So I guess if I separate out all my invested assets and look at their growth/dividends, I could calculate CAGR... just when I thought I'd created "enough" spreadsheets!

CAGR   =   ( EV / BV)^(1 / n) - 1

where:

EV = Investment's ending value
BV = Investment's beginning value
n   = Number of periods (months, years, etc.)

I like this way of thinking about things. In the past 106 months I've done way too much to really figure out (getting married, graduating, graduate school) but will definitely have to look at this over the next years.

I've been tracking "12 month total NW change" in my spreadsheet since getting enough data, might be interesting to add a column too for "average monthly increase since getting married" :)

CAGR   =   ( EV / BV)^(1 / n) - 1

where:

EV = Investment's ending value
BV = Investment's beginning value
n   = Number of periods (months, years, etc.)

Great formula.  But mostly only useful if there were no contributions along the way--unlikely for most Mustachians!

I prefer IRR for this reason, you can capture your rate of return based on when/how much you contributed.

It's interesting what people track in their NW speadsheets. I track (beyond the balance sheet items of assets and liabilities):

$ change from prev month
% change from prev month
$ change from prev year
% change from prev year
Total % change since I started tracking
Total $ value change since I started tracking
3,6,12 month moving averages of assets, liabilities, and net worth.... not sure why I do that :)

It's nice to see in the yearly chart the $ change from previous year gradually going up

With the big gains in the stock market we have hit new highs for avg monthly net worth increase!

our previous high was $12,529 but just calculating it again for this year and it's $18,307!  Wow, that was shocking even to me and I track our progress often!!
