I colored my own hair and did foil highlights saved ~$150.
« on: January 17, 2016, 09:16:07 AM »
I have been coloring my own hair for 20+ years. However, in recent years due to bleaching it out to platinum it was a dried bird's nest of damaged hair. I have spent the past 6 months transitioning to new coloring techniques for a darker blonde. This morning I applied foil highlights to my hair. People pay $150+ in this area for color and foil highlights at a salon. The total cost for the color is about $6 and highlights $2 in supplies. A couple YouTube videos and it wasn't too hard to manage the highlights on my own. Only took about 15 minutes to put in the foils and 10 minutes to process.

Good for you :) !!

This will get your hair healthy. It is vegetable dyes instead of chemicals and produces a more beautiful, natural result.

As your hair grows out, new dyed hair will automatically feel fine

Congrats!!!!
Good for you.
My wife would spend exactly that to get her hair done and was telling me that its a going rate at hair salons until I put my foot  down and demanded to find an alternative. She was telling me it had to be done 3-4 times per year for a whopping price tag of $450-600. Since then she was able to work it out with her hair stylist where he would come to our house and does it as a side gig for much less.

I have actually never had my hair colored in the salon because of the cost. I want my hair to be "ok" looking, not $1000 per year in hair color costs looking. Anyhow, dying hair isn't really that hard. The foils were definitely more challenging, mainly because you need 3 hands to do them. I watched some YouTube videos to get a handle on it and it wasn't too bad. I asked around on a couple beauty forums to find good products. My hairdresser (I still pay for haircuts) says my color looks good because I manage to get the color on the back of my head, and apparently DIY often forget to do this.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
