Please shed a tear for me...
« on: August 28, 2014, 03:42:33 PM »
I bit the bullet and listed my motorcycle on Craigslist.  It has been with me for nine years and has seen a lot of the USA.  This one I'm going to miss.

Congrats!  I sold my atv recently so I understand, and I had one small quick tear too.

Congrats Joggernaut. There is also a thread on the same subject below somewhere started by Timmmmy (is that South Park's Timmmmy?). Most of us who sold our bike's recently, or even sold them awhile ago,  feel your pain and sympathize. It's a hard thing to part with when you've been riding a long time. Well mine isn't technically sold yet even though I have someone who plans to buy it. I won't consider it sold until I have the hard, cold cash in my dainty little hands!

You have great memories, maybe even a few scars.  You can always rent one, right?

Tough decision, but don't look back.

DH sold his motorcycle of many years right before we started dating. I thank God every day that he did it before I came on the scene. Now, I have nothing against motorcycles, it's those damn other drivers (and texters) who have no motorcycle awareness that I worry about. I'd be a wreck every time he used it, so I am so, so, so glad he did it of his own accord.

Diane C. But you missed out on the fun stuff :-)  But I know what you mean - it can be a dangerous hobby. My brother died in a freak m.c. accident - hit by an owl and knocked off the bike at high speed - so even without other cars or drivers around bit can be dangerous.  But I do miss riding myself, and miss the fun and comraderie of the people I often rode with (sports bikes) and my long solo cross country rides. But too many crazy drivers out there. Wonder why Jogger not and the other's here are selling their bikes as it's a pretty mustachian way to get around.

Spartana: This one isn't being used any more.  Right hip replaced and works good.  Left hip replaced three times and still doesn't work well.  Can no longer lift the bike if I drop it, and its difficult to hold it up using the left leg.  MPG on the Yamaha 1100cc is only 30 mpg at 80 mph, which is the Texas speed limit on the interstate.  I get 30 mpg in the 2000 Honda Accord that is our main driver.  However, I hope to talk the DW into letting me have a 250cc scooter instead.

The motorcycle has gone and the money will be deposited next week.  Wasn't as hard as I thought because it went to someone who was looking for that exact model and rides as much as I did.

Congratulations Joggernot! Funny, DH just sold his motorcycle boots. They were a very specific pair, made to match his limited production bike. He had them on CL for weeks with no bites. He finally got a guy who rode over fifty miles to check them out. He rode up on the same make and model bike that DH sold. DH was so happy to find a guy with the same bike (and shoe size) that he knocked another $25 off the already low price, but hey, they went to a good home, and everybody's happy.

I feel for you,

It was a year ago that I sold the airplane I built.. 220mph of aerobatic goodness.. and I built every part of it, even painted it.

Flew it across country many times.

That was hard seeing it blast off without me chasing a light jet and not that far behind..:(

But the financial liberation is awesome...:)

Congrats! My bike is also gone (and the check is in the bank) but I know I'll be missing it a lot even though I didn't ride much here (SoCal) as I did when I lived in other parts of the country. So will shed a tear for you along with my own.

Congrats! I grew up riding motorcycles and used to tour into my 30's. I originally sold my bikes because of lifestyle/new baby/moving needs but always thought I'd get back into riding. Last year, I had some money saved and started really looking for a decent bike. Of course, there are tons of them out there, but then my wife and I started thinking about the people we'd known personally who'd either been killed or severely injured (one lost a leg, one suffered massive head trauma) we realized that in 20 years we'd had 9 people we'd known personally either die or get injured. I still love bikes, but that was it. I will probably never own one again. A nice Jeep however... :)

I once had a Jeep CJ and a little Suzuki Samari and while they aren't quit the same as having a MC they are fun - and you don't have to wear a helmet and they come with seat belts! Of course that horrible, horrible gas mileage kind of kills the "fun" buzz. Think I'll stick to my bicycle.

Rereading this I got to thinking --"what was the reason for the sale?"

Here's a couple of new thoughts I had if it was simply for the money.

1. If you truly enjoy riding,  why not be patient and look for bikes that are selling at a deep discount.  Usually around xmas time around here.   That way you can use them for a couple of years and resell at a profit.
2.  Bikes seem like an economical alternative to car driving as far as gas goes.
3. If you get good at buying bikes cheap and reselling, you could actually make a business out of it and have several choices of bikes to ride at a time.

I see signs tacked up on poles all the time here that say "we buy Harleys."   I assume that these people are looking for folks in need of quick cash and buy the bikes on the cheap.  I also assume they then take their time and sell them for a profit.

Same theories apply to cars as well.  Especially if one obtains a dealers license.

So, "Yes, Virginia,"  you can have your bike and make a profit as well.

Reason for the sale in my case was that I couldn't ride any longer and I'm probably going to move to a scooter.  I just had the second "revision" on a bad hip replacement (three total surgeries) and I still haven't recovered fully.  Couldn't reliably hold the bike up when stopped, so best to sell it.  I've ridden since I was 14, so it hurts to not be able to ride a m/c any longer.  BTW, no accidents and I'm now 68.  I consider them quite safe.

I know how you feel and will feel when it goes.  In your case, i think you will be happy with the outcome for many reasons.  About 18 months ago I sold my very well cared for and loved sea kayak.  It bothered me at the time but it was the right decision and I am happy I did it.

For me it was just that I wasn't riding as much as I use to because I live in a very crowded part of SoCal. So sold the bike (Ducati) and will maybe get another sports bike once I move out of this area to a place I can actually ride instead of spending my time lane splitting thru endless traffic jams and trying not to die :-)! I've ridden since I was 11 - first dirt and then on to street bikes as an adult. For years a MC was my only form of transportation. After I retired I would take my little cruiser (very old Yamaha Maxim I had for years) out on long road/camping trips for several months at a time (leaving the sports bike Suzuki GSXR 650) home. But after doing that for awhile I decided I wanted to travel full time with my dogs so sold them both. Then a friend had a used Ducati he was selling cheap and I couldn't pass it up.
