Saved massively by DIY-ing appliance repair
« on: December 22, 2016, 09:19:27 AM »
So due to massive amounts of OT I had been putting off getting appliance repairs and it had lead to our washer, dishwasher and oven had issues.

The dishwasher was not dissolving the detergent nor cleaning anything, the oven''s broiler worked, but was not getting to temperature when baking and the washer wasn't draining.

Finally 2 weeks ago we called around and turns out just getting people to look at the appliances would have been $300 plus for all 3 appliances just for diagnostics, then on top of that cost of any parts and labour to repair them so likely would have been over $500.

I wasn't too excited about this considering the appliances are all low end models put in by the builder that I could replace for fully functional used models for less than that amount. So I decided I would give it a try myself despite my lack of appliance repair experience.

Over the last week we managed to fix the dishwasher and I took apart the oven and washer. It seems simply taking apart and putting back together the washer resolved whatever was causing the washer not to drain and I found out the terminal connector to the bake element of my oven had burnt out and simply replacing that(the part cost only $0.60) was all that was necessary to fix it. So in the end instead of spending $500+ for repairs I was able to fix it with $0.60 and a handful hours of work in total.

The takeaway for myself and anyone reading this not comfortable in their abilities to fix things themselves is just give it a try and you might be surprised.

Well all I can say is check how expensive a repair would be compared to buying a used set instead and if the latter is cheaper then there really is no harm in trying to repair it yourself first and like my situation you might be surprised how easy and cheap it can turn out to be.

and thanks to everyone.

There are lots of great YouTube videos that will show you how to diagnose and fix appliances. The worst that can happen is that you take it apart and can't put it back together, and that doesn't leave you any worse off than you started.

That's how I fixed my washer, dryer, and dishwasher.  Saved a freakin' fortune.

I had a problem with my over the range microwave turntable not turn.
It would have cost $90 just to get someone to come look at it.
I learned how to replace the turn table motor on YouTube.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the problem.
Repairing the circuit board was above my learning level
So I learned how to replace the entire microwave on YouTube!

The thoughest part about fixing these things is getting the right wiring  and parts diagram! Another good thing to learn is the sequence of operation of your furnace, they are relatively easy to work on, easier than a washer and dryer IMHO.

Awesome!  I've fixed quite a few microwaves with fuse replacement.

I wish it was that easy! Actually, the replacement model was very similar to the original so I didn't have to change out the mounting bracket.
It was probably easier than getting to the fuse but obviously more expensive.
I did wait for the holiday sales to order it though and saved almost 50% :)
