Passed $401k in the 401k
« on: March 06, 2014, 11:57:09 PM »
Tomorrows jobs number may take me back below (but i bet it's brushed off as weather related so no biggie), but closed around $405,000 today.

Has been a fun milestone I've been looking forward to hitting.

Congratulations!! Those number game benchmarks are always fun to keep an eye on. Here's hoping that 501K gets here quickly.
I enjoy noticing unusual symbolic number combinations too and I'm a big fan of pi day - March 14th - and always make a fruit pie to celebrate.

Congratulations!

When I was younger, I used to think a 401(k) was how much money your company gave you when you retired! Haha seemed logical at the time.

you should be dam close to retiring then.  i'll be 39 by the time i hit that mark and i'm 27 now at an assumed earnings of 5.5% to adjust for inflation

Congrats! I like fun milestones like that.  I'm looking forward to crossing $500k in tax favored retirement investments for no other reason than to know we've hit it. I don't expect to get there for a couple years, but it's a milestone I'm looking forward to.

Thanks for the support and encouragement. I'm in my mid 30s. It's been a fun ride so far.  I'm workin to build more passive income generating assets, but the accumulation phase has worked pretty well.

Well done.

Question. I've always been curious.

Is there a 401a, 401b etc? what is after k, a 401l?

Yes. The401(k) is a reference to Internal Revenue Code section 401(k) which provides for employee deferral contributions. 401(m) is employer matching contributions. IIRC it goes up to 401(a)(31).
There is 401(b), etc.

Haha!  Congrats on crossing that milestone.

I remember back in the crash of 2009 some people at work kept saying "my 401k just turned into a 101k!" =).

Congrats!  It is great to hit those marks you set for yourself.  We hit the 2-fer mark yesterday, and I keep asking myself, "why are we FI, but not yet RE?"  It's been discussed in several threads.  We're still working through the how, when, etc. of RE.  We took a step forward in our family and said we call this our "rollout plan" phase.  It takes some doing to leave the workforce (at least in our case).  As you then go for the $802k mark, be thinking about your "rollout plan".

Congratulations!!! I don't know why but I've never made that correlation or seen that as a benchmark before. Now I have another goal to look forward to.

Sure. Once I hit a goal lets to double down on a bigger one. Ok cool. I'm good with it. Assuming 8% market returns, I'd be about 42 when hitting the $802k mark. Ill probably still be working then.

That's brilliant Baylor!

I'll never get to 401k in my 401k because I don't have a 401k, and 403k in a 403b just doesn't have the same ring about it :)~

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
