I'm car-free!
« on: May 29, 2014, 10:37:48 PM »
I bought a Jeep a couple years ago, before going mustachian, and now I live within walking distance to work and downtown so I don't need a vehicle. I've been wanting to sell it for a while and found out my dad wants to buy it. I'm gonna give him a good deal on it, and I'll still get to borrow it if I want to. I am actually OK with him just using it for free, but he wants to pay me for it. I mainly just wanted to quit wasting money on insurance and registration for a car I hardly ever drive. I dropped it off at his house yesterday. No more car expenses!

Congrats!  We have always been a one car family, which all of our friends find "crazy".  Can't imagine what the response to "no car" would be.

Congrats!! That must feel amazing.

We went car-free a couple of years ago and it's been great. A few minor inconveniences from time to time, but overall huge win.

Thanks everyone; it does feel good!

Guess I should add that my lady still has a car, so we are a one-car couple. I don't ride in it that often, and I would have sold mine even if I didn't get to use hers sometimes, so still I feel car-free.

It still counts (as car-free) as long as you don't live together yet.  Otherwise, one car is still awesome.

I guess we are a one-car couple then. Still feels good!

It must feel good!

We (wife and I) own a small car (2012 Fiat), which we rarely use. I am away three weeks at the time, then back home two weeks, and rarely use the car when I am here because everything I need is a bike ride away. My wife takes the transit and refuses to drive, so the car sits unused in the parkade for months at the time. I know it is logical to get rid of it, and use car2go whenever we need a car, but I can't get myself to make that decision. I need a few facepunches.

Well I can't punch you in the face for that. My Jeep sat in my driveway for about a year without being used much. My dad wanting to buy it made it much easier for me to part with it.

I didn't quite go car-free, but did sell my 2000 Cherokee (for $1700) and bought a 1988 Sentra (for $400). Little bit of work and a weekend, and it's my new daily driver...even though I still bike most places. Way to go for you!!

Congrats!

We don't own a car, but we own a pile of 2 wheelers.

Not having to worry about street sweeping days, parking, etc. is really nice.  Insurance on the scoots/motorcycles is a lot cheaper, and we get great mpg.

We still walk or take the bus a lot though.  My bus pass is free from work and hers is paid for by school.
