Our Badassity starts now & here is our numbers.
« on: September 19, 2016, 06:55:32 PM »
Even though I gathered my net worth numbers and started making some life style changes in the beginning of this summer, it took me a while to convince Mrs. She was not very receptive at the beginning:
  • She didn't understand why I would want to leave my well paying job.
  • She couldn't initially grasp why a man would NOT want to work until their 60s.
  • We still have kids to send to college. One just started at a private college. I know I know you can crucify me later. :-)
  • She was worried about how we would explain our life style changes to our friends and the backlash we would receive.
  • Even if we do it what if we run out of money?
  • And ..............

But eventually she came around and she said she trusted my judgement. Now that is too much pressure. :-)
Here is where we stand as of 9/5/2016:

Details are below:
http://www.dailygrindfree.com/2016/09/05/net-worth-starting-point/

This month I started a spreadsheet to track our budget to see where our money is going and where we can cut more if that is possible. I would love to hear from this community on what we can do to get things more efficient. I think I have a lot to learn on investment and investment strategies. Any help, encouragement or comments will be much appreciated.

Thanks FIRE_at_45. I completely agree on documenting and monitoring everything. I don't want to go too crazy and deprive the family by cutting a lot. But I definitely see, now, that we wasted so much money over the years. Currently, biggest drain is the house. I am looking into downsizing and possibly even renting if it makes sense. I will also need to review the current investments and see if I need to move things around.
Thanks again.

Understanding where the money is going is a huge step towards getting it under control and moving towards your goals.

Tracking your spending by categories and looking back at old statements to create a history and see some trends is a good start.  Before really trying to work towards FI I had already been utilizing a spread sheet to track spending so for many years making it was pretty easy.  We now group our spending as follows.

Bills (monthly or others): We took a hard look at these and did everything we could to drive them down.  This including switching mobile phone companies, getting rid of cable tv and just using internet services, reevaluating insurance (car, home, life).

Mortgages: We own a couple of rentals from not being in a position to sell when we were transferred to a new location.  We track these pretty closely and watch the mortgage rates to see if a refinance is in our best interest.  Right now all three of our properties have rates well below 3% so I don't think we will do much better than that.

Gas: We track this separately and do our best to consider when we drive and how we can get the most out of any trip when the car comes out of the garage.

Cash: Money in your wallet with just disappear so we try not to have it there.  Trying to keep this number to zero each month is a good thing.  If we do take cash out, it normally is for a specific purpose and we track it in another category.

Groceries: We hope this is our most expensive area each month and even then my wife is working on cutting costs here by changing up what we are eating to make it less expensive

Eating out: We count anytime money is spent on food or drink not to be consumed at home as this.  On a good month, this category for us is close to zero.  This month we had spent $10 in total until we met some friends from out of town out for drinks.  We would have had them over to our house except they were staying about 30 minutes away and were seeing quite a few people while they were around and unable to get out to our side of town.

Merchandise: If it was purchased and an object is going to come into our house then it is falls here.  Clothing, toys, furniture... this is normally pretty low.  Any major purchase we talk about and shop around to make sure we are getting a good deal.

Other: This is where we spend money on either stuff we can't do ourselves or really doesn't fit in other groups.  Dry cleaning for my work uniforms, money spent on swim lessons for the kids, dues for professional organizations....

We don't set specific limits on any group, but we always try to spend less in each group.  Some are easier than others.  As eating out goes down, then groceries will go up a little (a good thing).  We also go over the spreadsheet a couple of times a month (ok, I bore my wife with this and she tolerates it) so we know where we are and how we are doing.  This I think helps the most so we don't get to the end of the month and go "what the hell happened".  We also look at the upcoming months/year to make sure we have a plan for expenses.

I completely agree. This is my initial goal as well. I also want my wife to see everything in detail. It takes two to tango.

This is certainly one of the main things we need to work on. I started taking my lunches with me. So far, did it every single day. Coffee shops are another story. We will work on that one.

We already got rid of the cable TV. But internet is still $79.95 and we have Netflix for movies. I am looking into downsizing or possibly even renting.

I am not sure how bad$%# we will get, but we will give it a go.

Your first image in that linked post (NW-2016-09-05-1), is .tiff, and is broken for me.  If I change the extension to jpg, it works.

Good luck on your journey!

Ah, you appear to have the same image twice. The first one links to a tiff, which is broken, the second the jpg.

If I right click the broken image, the URL for it is http://www.dailygrindfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/NW-2016-09-05-1.tiff

If I change .tiff to .jpg, it works (and is the same as the second image, which is already .jpg).

See attachment.

Got it and made the changes. It should work now. Thanks a lot. I think it happened because of me changing the folder structure in word press at some point.
Thanks again.

Yes, first have to review and analyse spending to understand where money is going, as what you expected and what actually happened can be quite different. Then you can see what looks reasonable and what doesn't so decide where easy savings can be made or some sacrifices could be tolerated.

Another aspect is thinking about hidden costs and charges, e.g. if you have investments in funds with excessive charges, or conversely have excess cash savings earning a low return that should be invested. For the OP's case of $300k liquid assets, if it were all subject to fees that are 1% too high (1.5% instead of 0.5% fee on funds) that means $3k a year in excess charges i.e. $250 a month, which might be larger than any overspending identified, and could be improved without any lifestyle changes at all.

Here is where we stand as of 10/5/2016:

We are trying to stash as much as possible. We are also looking into generating additional money trough some side hustles. Last month we made a few dollars by selling some of our items on EBay. Took some items to resale shop. We will see how much we get back from there.

Here is where we stand as of 11/4/2016:

Nothing special happened in the savings and investing side of things this month, other than the sucktastic Stock Market performance. We continued making our mortgage payments, deposited $800 to Vanguard taxable account and added $1500 to my 457 retirement account.

Last month, I moved my Prudential Traditional IRA and Transamerica 401K balances to newly opened Vanguard Traditional IRA in order to consolidate some of our accounts. Bank of America Money Market SEP IRA account is the only one left to be moved there.

I have been categorizing non-necessities based on 'Your Money or Your Life', meaning I make the categories be things I care about (either minimizing OR maximizing).  So I have one for fun, tools, etc... Every month I look at the 'fun' category and make sure I'm spending enough, but not too much.  I try to keep spending on tools matched with my goals there, too.

So for the most part it's your standard categories (groceries, dining, fuel, etc...) which are pretty much just to be minimized, but there are other categories where spending correlates with enjoyment, so that just has to be adjusted month-to-month, down or up.

It is a great idea. BTW, 'Your Money or Your Life' is on my reading list. I heard that it was a must-read.

I don't know if I should keep posting monthly changes in this post or it is more suited for a journal. Journal also seems like a bigger commitment. :P

Do the journal thing.  It is quite fun, although I think most people like hearing about the actual struggles or successes rather than the here is my net worth.  I saved 75% etc.

I always worry about my life not being very interesting. :P Some day, may be some day. :-)

Well, i guess it is not about rock star living. :-) It just has to be somewhat interesting enough for people to show interest in what you are up to.

A few months ago, I borrowed $15K+ from Capital One in order to invest in a business. Total investment was/is $25K. Borrowing cost to me was a few bucks more than $300 (2% a year) for a year. It seemed like free money to invest. I made that $300 back in two weeks. That is why I have the balance.

This is a concern. It has happened to people on this site. The journal section is at least protected from internet search views, so the information you post won't be as widely available.

That is some great progress!...it must feel great looking back over the past year and seeing a net worth increase of over $70k since you started tracking it.

Now that you have a handle on how you are tracking things and what your income looks like, you can take the hard look to the future and start seeing what it will take to become financially independent.  What your revenue streams will look like vs what your cost of living will be.

To tell the truth, it feels awesome. :-) Started looking into how much we are spending and trying to figure out how much we will need once we call ourself FI. I am also looking into semi-FI option. I just want to be able set my own hours, work on whatever interests me and be location independent. I don't want money to be the deciding factor. We will see what happens.

I thought about keeping a journal here. But I don't know how much I would want to talk about my personal life other than financials. Still undecided. :-)

Here is where we stand as of 06/03/2017:

Same boring effective strategy and another month of moving the right direction. We continued to make our regular mortgage payments, kept depositing $300 every Thursday to Vanguard taxable account, added $1500 to my 457 retirement account and continued to make a few bucks from other investments & side hustles.

Last month's details are below:

I did a quick math and with your "boring" (now effective) strategy, you have only put in $28,800 for the year but your total savings and investment is around $100,000. That compound interest is kicking the saving's rate butt!

In the next couple of years, watch your compound interest grow so massively, that your savings will only make a dent to your investment growth.

That election dip is barely even noticeable anymore.
