OMG Meal Planning Magic!
« on: November 14, 2014, 10:17:33 AM »
I am newly converted to a MMM (since April 2014) way of life after living a 'normal' consumer-centric life .. so far we have cut the cord on cable and worked to get out of our debt emergency (30K).  We rarely eat out and when we do, even my hubby (who was a hard sell on this new way of living) is turned off by the huge bill.

Anyway .. to the point of the title of my post .. after these many months of tracking our expenses to see where our money goes, our grocery bill continued to evade me.  I tried putting money in an envelope only to be used for groceries, even coupon cutting and shopping the flyer sales .. I could not hit our budget UNTIL I started Meal planning!  I found the budgetbytes.com site and it's been amazing!  I select 10 recipes and add the ingredients to my ziplist.  Shop for only those ingredients and wallah .. many amazing meals at ridiculous savings ... and .. wait for it ..

I HIT OUR GROCERY BUDGET FOR THE FIRST TIME!

We ate like kings (left overs for lunch were amazing) ... Meal Planning ... thank you! thank you! thank you!

Congrats on hitting your grocery budget! It all seems so simple:

make a meal plan, buy the food, cook the food, eat the food = staying on the budget

In reality, I too, struggle to keep us on a grocery budget. I'd like to try this too!

Thanks for posting!

Awesome!  Congratulations on accomplishing what I've been trying to do consistently.

Just out of curiosity, what's your monthly budget?  For how many people?

Thanks for posting this. However, I was just on the site, and when I tried to save a recipe, I saw this message:

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seems like everything that made this such an easy way of planning is going away in a couple weeks. Please tell me I'm mistaken...

She is of course using the arabic Wallah: I promise by God.

"Shop for only those ingredients and [I promise by God] .. many amazing meals at ridiculous savings ... "

Either that or you have a bit of a rude spelling-correcting problem.

Curious,  I checked the budget bytes site briefly but the meals looks a little overly fancy and a bit above budget for me.

So what is your per person per day food budget?  I generally shoot for $2 pppd, so $180 per month.  Usually fail and end up around $3 pppd or $270 month for 3.

What are your budget parameters?

I have made a few really successful dishes from Budget Bytes:

http://www.budgetbytes.com/2014/02/one-pot-beef-mushroom-stroganoff/

http://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/09/dal-nirvana/

http://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/09/naan/

And I'm looking forward to trying more of them. I think that the cost per person depends on where you are coming from. If you've been eating out of boxes, this is a wayyyyy cheaper way to eat (and healthier!). Of course, its good to have the goal of continuing to reduce costs, and so for someone who already has a very low food budget, some of these recipes may seem fancy and luxurious.

This week, I made this soup: http://www.budgetbytes.com/2014/11/moroccan-lentil-vegetable-stew/

So freaking good and so cheap! I've made probably > 20 recipes from budget bytes, and all of them have turned out great.

This is my personal favorite: http://www.budgetbytes.com/2013/05/chipotle-sweet-potato-burgers/

Wow, aren't you trying to eat more paleo?  (Or maybe that's someone else?)

I'd have a hard time hitting that budget.  Part of that is location, but also what you eat.

I love budgetbytes.com -- most recipe sites are too bland for me, but hers actually have good flavor.

I tried using ziplist (too bad it's going away), but found it didn't work for me because I kept procrastinating about sitting down and doing the planning.  (I don't mind the actual cooking, but I hate thinking about what to make.  Weird, I know.)

I think I've finally figured out a system that works better for me.  I took a list pad, and wrote down 15 meals that we actually like to eat.  Most of these can be made using items I keep stocked in the pantry or in the freezer, or use produce that can be used in multiple dishes (onions, zucchini, etc).  Now when it comes time to make dinner I can just quickly look down the list each evening and choose one that sounds good and that I have ingredients for.  Before doing the weekly shopping I mentally pick a few meals I'd like to have soon, and add the fresh items needed to my shopping list -- pantry and freezer items get stocked up when there is a sale or when I am close to running out.  I only try to make a new dish once or twice a month, and if it's a winner it gets added to the meal list.  For side-dishes/vegetables I'm trying to come up with one or two ways of making each that we like.

It's not as efficient and money saving as true menu planning, but I needed a system that didn't require a lot of pre-planning and didn't lock me in to eating the meals I had predicted beforehand.

DH is the cook, grocery shopper in our house.  He does the same thing over at AllRecipes.com.  Plans the meals, makes the list, shops the list.  What ends up putting our food budget so high each month is all the convenience items that go in the kids' lunch boxes.  We are working to wean them off the Gushers, Fiber One bars, etc., but it is a process.  Also, we are terrible at actually eating our leftovers.

I'll send him over to the site you recommend.  He hates when I bring up the grocery spending, but it is a reality.  He makes a lot of different ethnic foods, and he ends up having to buy some unusual ingredient every week.  Over the weeks, that adds up just like the lunchbox foods.

This has really helped my grocery bill.  I just have the e-flier links pinned to my browser bar, so I remember to check them each week and figure out what I want to purchase, and don't make a plan only to discover that the ingredients aren't on sale.

Guess I need to take a closer look at BudgetBytes; the recipes sound great!

Congrats on meeting the goal- It's all about steps!

I will check out the website you mentioned as I've never heard of it. One thing I do is collect recipes we like or sound interesting and then I spend 2-3 hours and prep everything into tupperware or ziploc bags and label each meal. I then place in freezer and have meals for up to 3 months at a time. It saves me lots of money and more importantly my time. There is always variety and we defrost what we feel like the night before.

I usually do entrees but am starting to get into smoothie bags for breakfast or breakfast sandwiches, along with soups for lunch and basically anything that freezes well.

zette  That sounds like a system that would work for me!  I also hate to sit every week a plan that week's meals - It is SO HARD - but I can cook frugally from a pantry easily, and already have a mental list of recipes as my 'go to' plan.  Just a little bit more formalising and I can actually answer DH when he asks "what do you want me to get this week?" when he does the weekly shopping (bless him!)

I have a general plan that goes like this:
Mon: Meat  (a whole chicken, or a large stew, or a roast of some sort, with veg that complements it.  Make sure to NOT DISH IT ALL UP.  If it's particularly delicious, don't even let the family know that there is more in the kitchen. They can fill up on vegetables)
Tues:  Meat redux (leftovers from the night before, remade into something new - a topping for baked potatoes, a stir-fry, a rice bake casserole etc).  If no leftovers: meatballs.
Wed: lentils or beans (Indian or Mexican)
Thurs: soup or other leftover bonanza  (hash browns/fritters, quiche, etc)
Fri: kids cook (Usually sausages, boiled potatoes and boiled carrots, but they're starting to branch out).
Saturday and Sunday: DH runs the kitchen.

That said, we usually have cooked breakfasts (DH's domain again), which are not exactly frugal in themselves, but it does mean DH doesn't need lunch at all, and bacon and eggs (and mushrooms and spinach and often liver) cooked at home is still better than him buying lunch at work. I do eat lunch, as my appetite at breakfast doesn't stretch as far as DH's, but I'm at home and usually bake a potato in the microwave and have it with chilli sauce and cheese.

Thanks everybody .. you guys crack me up .. almost the same amount of comments were made on my bad spelling as were made on my OP!  You're merciless!  (wait .. let me run the spell checker ..)

BudgetBytes.com Garlic Rosemary Beef Stew in the crock-pot today ... can't wait to for that amazing aroma to fill my nostrils when get home from work!

Tandoori Chicken and homemade Naan Bread tomorrow and then the Coffee Rubbed Pulled Pork for Thursday night .. oh my!  All that and on a budget?

-Same issues here but we are taking our left overs to work now for lunch and hubby and I are really enjoying them!  The snacks for the kids are tough.  They are the only think I shop for in the middle aisles of the store.  I do give them fruit as well but need to alternate with cookies or crackers and cheese once in a while if I don't want them to get tired of fruit all the time.  Also can't send nuts due to allergies which is a shame.

Haha we just made this for dinner yesterday! I cut up a chuck roast that was on sale for $4/lb and served the stew over rice. Soooo good. In fact I just ate leftovers for lunch about 30 minutes ago :)

Bob Werner, that budget is seriously amazing to me. I would be curious to see what a week of meals looks like for your family and maybe get some inspiration!

Congrats on your efforts and thanks for sharing!  I'm amazed at how much of a process this is.  Just when you think you've mastered it, you'll figure out something new and cheaper!  And part of it is just building habits into your routine, like the meal planning.

We do pretty well with the dinner routine/luch leftovers and a stock of yummy, easy weeknight meals with pantry and freezer staples supplemented with fresh veggies: soup night, fish night, meat night (sausages/roast/chops), pasta night, eggs, etc.  But snacks are something I"m working on.  Years ago, we went from packaged snacks to nuts and fruit, for health reasons.  But more recently I realized how expensive nuts are!  So I've been re-thinking homemade snacks.  I have sneered at muffins and cookies as snacks (which are ridiculously cheap and yummy when homemade), but I'm coming around to the reason housewives used to rely on these.  An egg or two, a cup of flour, negligible amounts of sugar, baking soda, and milk.  Just add desired flavour: fruit going off? something in the freezer? Too much of a cheap or seasonal vegetable (zuchinni, carrots, pumpkin)?  Presto--cheap and filling snacks. (And I mean presto--if you get good, these can be whipped together in minutes and then they bake for 10-40 minutes, depending on what you're making)

We've also started making our own yogurt and our own granola--awesome breakfast and also cheap snacks...

We're big fans of meal planning. We've been on hiatus for a couple of weeks since I had my wisdom teeth out and have had to decide what I'm comfortable eating day by day, but we're finally getting back into it.

One thing we found is useful is having a master list of our 25 favourite meals. We print it out and cross them off as we make them, and don't repeat until we've made everything. Combined with trying out new recipes here and there and having leftovers sometimes, this gives us about a one month rotation with no repetition (except for Saturday Yakisoba/Yakiudon lunch - that's set in stone!).

We set an arbitrary grocery budget of $230/month for two people, though that includes toilet paper, cleaning stuff, etc - we average around $1/serving for meals, plus about 50 cents a day each for baking, drinks (soy milk and juice), ice cream, snacks, whatever.

I love budget bytes. Some of my favorites are the soy dijon chicken with sweet potatoes, slow cooker taco chicken bowls and sausage and kale cassoulet.

Just this week I made the pumpkin spice granola and flat bread except I made a bbq chicken one with some leftovers.

So weird .. the Epicurious app doesn't show any of my recipes but when I browse and go to Epicurious.com I can see them and use the shopping list functionality.  It is really the ability to see a recipe and add it to your shopping list together that made this so easy to stay on budget.

Anyway, I ended up adding a shortcut icon on my phone to the epicurious.com website and I can use the functionality that way.

How could a site a huge as Epicurious.com not have an app that works?  Crazy!

Made the Easy Sesame Chicken tonight with Jasmine rice .. yum!  And I made scones this morning for the kids for breakfast .. me .... baking in the morning!  I feel like a farmers wife! :)

Meal planning question:

So I was thinking about this today, and realized that I have a number of meals that we ONLY eat and summer, and then there are some that we generally ONLY eat in winter (especially soups). So would you have separate sections of your list for summer and winter meals?
I'm probably overcomplicating things here; I usually do! haha!

Meal planning question:

So I was thinking about this today, and realized that I have a number of meals that we ONLY eat and summer, and then there are some that we generally ONLY eat in winter (especially soups). So would you have separate sections of your list for summer and winter meals?
I'm probably overcomplicating things here; I usually do! haha!

That's a good point.. We have a bunch of recipes, but we have to scroll though all the 'kruft' (holiday deserts, various other things) when we are trying to meal plan.. It WOULD be nice to have either a 'favorite' or 'front of box' selection or something like that.. or as you say, categories (summer/winter/desert)

yep, we definitely have two different lists with some overlap.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
