He's probably called in to surgery and needs to get there fast. But on normal clinic days...

Badassity and awesome! I also think the neighbor kid in the leather and helmet is quite secure looking. Love the casual look for the bike.

With that many kids, I would have been more inclined towards a quadracycle (e.g. this, this or even this), especially when the kids get bigger.

At my huge law firm, I am one of 3 people who bike commute and the only attorney who does so.   The facilities manager has an office just a few doors down from mine and when I gave up my parking spot in May (saving $130/ mo) he tsk-tsk'ed me and shook his head then tried to talk me out of it.

We pass each other in the hall or elevator every day and the only thing he ever thinks to say to me is "still biking?"

I sent him this story with a short note about what a wimp I am compared to this woman and he responded "She is gonna die young."

Wow.  Just wow.   I wrote back "Interesting . . . my first thought was 'she's going to live forever!'   I bet she has the cardio health and BMI of an Olympian."

No response.

Ha! I'm with you. She's gotta have some serious lung and leg power. My legs still burn when I go over the Brooklyn Bridge on my Citibike, carrying just... Me!

Wow, I'm impressed :O now that tomorrow is Saturday, I better spend a good part of it trying to get up this hill behind house that I can only make half way up before quitting and riding down before I try again

I'm also impressed that the kids know enough to not lean the bike to one side and tip over, but they have to lean to make a turn right?

I saw Emily present in person a year or so ago. She made a video that is really fun to watch. It's pretty much the same info as in the article you linked, but with music and more photos:

She stole the show that day!

With 6 kids, I think you need some sort of car, if only in case of an emergency.

I'm not sure we can assume he still drives a half mile to work. The 1/2 mile trip to visit her husband at work was before the family moved to Portland.

They live in Portland, which has 5 different options for car sharing. Plus her husband has a car. Plus I assume taxis are an option. I think they are well covered in cases of emergency.

I see her and the family drink raw milk. Nice! Pretty neat video...have to give her a lot of respect.

Yeah, I was surprised by that as well! Number of kids does NOT directly correlate to environmental impact — you could have one or NO kids and use (and waste) more planetary resources than someone who lives way more Mustachian and has six kids.

I've only got the one kid, but I'm still impressed by this woman and her creativity and leg power.

I feel like a wimp, I started biking to work for about 3 months and am now in a boot to a stress injury, my commute was only 3.5 miles each way and I am 37 years old, not obese but overweight.  I hope it heals so I can start again, see the doc again today.

By the way, children are the future of America and this woman should get a medal for raising so many.  I am the youngest of five and I am AWESOME.  Have two kids of my own.

LOL, yolfer, I was thinking the same thing!

Hard to reverse that at this point. At leat she is cutting her impact considerably from here on out, and she's happy(ier) in the mean time!

Very good point! That's the mustachian way of looking at it. Now I seem like a complainypants in comparison!

We have some great inventions here... They are called ambulance, police, public transport, cAr sharing, neighbours, taxis... if your next neighbour is a mile away, I agree, but in a city?
