Not badass yet, but making progress
« on: February 02, 2016, 08:23:05 AM »
First time posting, but have been lurking around for around a year. I've always been fairly frugal and good with my money (at least compared to the debt burdened masses out there), but this site (and its forum in particular)have given me a lot of good information and lots of information and inspiration to do better.
Before MMM:
*No debts and enough cash in the bank to not sweat things at the end of the week before payday like most people
*House paid off (financed for 30, and paid off in 10)
*Car paid off (financed for 5 and paid off in 1.5)
After MMM:
*Keeping detailed records of all money coming in and going out (all on paper. Not very "techy")
*Average saving rate for the year at 40% (varies month to month). I know there is much discussion as to how to measure savings, but the important part is that I am measuring my progress and keeping myself accountable.
*Switched from $100 a month Iphone/AT&T to $14 a month Moto X/Republic Wireless(don't spend a lot of time on my phone anyway)
*I now pack my lunch for work, and rarely ever touch the snack machines at work or the convenience stores to and from (a couple bucks here and there adds by the end of the month)
*Do my shopping at Aldi and Costco to save a couple bucks (Gas savings basically pays for my Costco membership)

Many other efforts I plan to tackle this year (cutting the cord from Comcast, just to name one off the top). I'm not giving a case study here with all the details, but just wanted to give a basic rundown to share where I am at and more importantly to thank everyone here again for all the valuable information and inspiration. Never participated in a forum online before, but hope to add to the conversation in the future.

Yay for improvements and welcome to the forum:)
No worries about the "non-techy - paper status" - good ole spiral notebook and my monthly journal work just fine for me. My stuff isn't all that complicated, besides, I enjoy sitting down with pen and paper and a cup of coffee and playing around with ideas for my budget.
However, this year we will focus more on Mr. R. - so I'll break down and use the case study and figure out how to set up a few spreadsheets for a better overview.

I love reading the before and after MMM posts - finding this forum kicked my motivation in high gear and it is entertaining to boot:)

If you're local and shopping at Aldi - give Grocery Outlet a shot. It's across from the Walmart (not far from the Costco). By far the best cheap food source, particularly for non-produce, I've ever seen.

Sounds like you may have already had a mustache before finding the site - I imagine it will only grow from here.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
