Double Down, that comment cracked me up.. And yes the wardrobe continues to grow, although she read through that thread 2 nights ago and said she's going to try to cut it back.

I'm up $20k. That's about 37% of my gross income, not including bonuses and overtime.

78k net worth increase.
36k from savings. 42k from investment returns.
Income was ~130k

Really a 27% savings rate isn't much to brag about. 2013 will be so different it will be impossible to compare.

$93177.03 net worth increase around 75K of that is from salary/401k/HSA matches and the rest from investment returns and appreciation.

We saved 53% of our salary which isn't that bad considering our higher cost of living and the fact that we are currently renters.

Would like to do even better in 2013 which may be harder because my bonuses will be smaller. Hopefully that just leaves room to flex the frugality muscle.

I'm not sure how people calculate the value of their house. I use what I payed for it minus what I still owe. According to Zillow it's up quite a bit, but I'm not sure how accurate that is, so I ignore it.

That's what I do.  According to the last appraisal, that's undershooting it by 80K, but I figure that helps me figure in all the costs of selling and remain conservative on it.

When I first learned about Zillow, their estimate was much higher than my county's tax appraisal, so I figured it was imaginary, but then the next year, the appraisal caught up.  So now I just average the two.

There are plenty of houses something like mine.  And my house is paid off, so it's no longer exciting to see what's going on with the amount I still owe.

Numerical proof of so much badassity.  I'm here to help most of you look better.

Up 22K, a 6% increase.

Gross pay was 44K.

Breakdown of most of it:
* pension: 70K to 75K (worked more, plus it earns 5%; this does not include the state contribution which helps them pay me when I retire but which I would not get if I cashed out)
* other retirement funds: 102K to 115K (added 5K; market rose)
* other stocks: 6K to 7K (no additional purchases besides what I got from dividends and selling some stocks to buy others to diversify better)
* savings bonds: 1.6K to 2.6K (I bought 1K more)
* other savings: 10K to 20K (I added a lot to this due to job instability)
* house: 161K to 155K (already paid off; value fell slightly)
* car: 8.7K to 8.6K (depreciation)
* vacation pay owed: 8K to 1.3K (had to cash it out between jobs--counted toward gross pay above)

My biggest increase was from 2009 to 2010: 52K or 20% (gross earnings 40K).

Rent for the sort of 2-1 apartment I would be renting if I were still renting is $700/month + utilities.  Taxes, insurance, and the amount I save for upkeep and repairs on my paid-off house = $600/month.  Not the greatest investment.

Don't mean to kick up a dead thread, but I just went through the last two years of bank and mortgage statements, and it looks like our number this year is $194,561.105$194,561.05.

That's a function of savings (pre and post tax), market returns, mortgage principle, house appreciation (tracking Zillow estimates over the course of the year to calculate the delta), and company stock vesting.

In 2011 our network decreased slightly (bad stock picking, family expenses, decreasing home value).

It will be hard to duplicate this again this year, but I think we can get pretty close. $130k went into the 'stache this year, which would be awesome to do two years in a row.

Sounds like he wrote a computer virus to steal all the fractional cents from business transactions.  Kind of like the take-a-penny, leave-a-penny tray, but with fractions of a penny done a million times over.

Also late to the thread, but reporting in a guesstimate:

+ 50k

Was around 40k of debt reduction (paid off my student loans, car), plus around 10k of 401k.

Holy Mackerel some of you did incredibly last year! Wow!
Our single income household's net worth went up 13.5% in 2012. We sold a small house and bought a much bigger house across the country. Even with those expenses we managed to be $24K richer now than this time last year. Last year DH made $40,300 gross base pay before OT. He worked about 250 hours of OT closing the plant in NJ and setting up operations here in CO. So strictly for comparison's sake, our net worth increased by 50% of hubby's pay last year. I expect it to be a similar story this year but we'll see how the market returns.

Up about 90k.

Considering our base gross pay as teachers is about 86k combined, I'm pretty happy with it.  (Basically we covered our living expenses with extra tutoring, summer school, and some rental profits and saved all of our "normal" income.)

Wouldn't mind improving on it, but it'll be tough to do.

I have only been tracking our Net Worth since July and we are up $10,153.  Not to bad for half a years worth of data. I expect to go way up this year as I just graduated and landed a great job! Hopefully this year we can get out of the negative net worth zone!

I'm up $25,700 - 27%, as it was my best year for income ever. First time I've topped $50,000 gross. And that's just me. Haven't finished DH and household networth yet. Probably around $40,000-$45,000 between both of us.

net worth went up $4200 to $11,000 (did get a pretty generous scolarship for starting uni)

My savings account is up $4600
Took on ~$3300 debt for uni first semester(indexed with inflation)
Bought a caravan in cash for $2500 (I live in it, in a backyard during uni, so I don't pay much rent) - I'm counting this as an asset
Paid my uni fees up front 2nd semester
My shares went from up by ~$400

2013 goals:
Pay all my uni fees up front, have $15,000 net worth (going to need a job during uni, could still be difficult), buy another packet of shares

Was up about $115K this year on salary right around that.  Had about 17K in dividends come in + market performed well and I spent about 22K last year.  I remember a few years ago that I was ecstatic to sock away 50K in a year.  It really does snowball.

I'm abit concerned that the markets look abit frothy at these levels so anticipating a painful correction at some point.

Net Worth is up $130,000 from January 2012! This includes a reduction in my mortgage of $47,650 and elimination of a $19,700 (@3.9%) car loan, and an increase in investments of 17.5% (including dividends)!

There is a bit of windfall involved here too, in the form of a layoff package paid to my wife, who picked up another job within weeks of the layoff.

We are very focused on eliminating that mortgage. It may not be the best thing to do financially, but mentally and spiritually, it is definitely the best thing for us. Hope to have the mortgage down another $28,000 next January (and paid off in August 2015). We'd go after it even harder, but there is a substantial penalty for paying the entire balance before August 2015.

Just finished my calculations for the year.

18k after tax investments
28k 401k and employer match
12k debt reduction
3k in investment gains
---------------------------
61k total!  That's ~85% of my total net worth!

For 2013 this is my goal:

21k debt reduction
35k 401k and employer match
18k taxable investments
?? investment gains
------------------------
74k + investment gains

The plan is FIRE by 2018

After I started on taxes I realized I been underestimating our income (overtime, raises, bonuses and ebay side gigs) -good.  Then I also realized that I overestimated our saving percentage-bad.  Wrote down every last drop of money on 1/8/2013 including anything under the sofa cushions.  Net worth as of today (excluding real estate and minus prorated yearly property taxes and insurance)  is up $5135. Try not to obsess too much on day to day with market fluctations, but what I am even happier about is our savings rate for the 31 days is 61.9%.  I know I can't do that all the time, but it brightened my day.

Ps I give alot of credit this board and this community for helping me get my mojo back

I don't know my exact net worth at beginning of the year, but it was approximately one year's expenses.  Now it's 3-4 years expenses, so I guess it tripled?

Am I the first one to post in terms of year's expenses?

That's too vague of a number, due to expenses changing as well as net worth changing.

I.e. Say you had one year's net worth in 2011 expenses.  Then in 2012 you double your stache, and halve your expenses.  Suddenly you have 4 year's expenses.  You went from 1 years worth of expenses to 4 years.  You didn't quadruple your net worth though.  You just doubled it.

It's certainly a good number to know in some circumstances, but you shouldn't confuse it with net worth.

I feel a lot happier looking at my net worth in terms of year's worth of expenses.  Up by 1.5 years worth of expenses in 2012, to 3.75 total years of expenses (saved up in 3 years, paid off last of debt in Feb 2010).  At that rate I should be able to retire in under 10 years (assuming that SS continues to exist - of course, that's a big gamble, so I probably won't quit all forms of work at 43)

I like that way of looking at it!  I'll have to figure that one out for the future.  A wet finger in the air estimate puts us at increasing our net worth by a little over a year's expenses.  Surely we could get our expenses down lower to help that figure!

It might not be the true definition of a net worth, but what I love about looking at finances this way is that it changes the "currency"  -time, not money!  It puts the most important thing to you in focus.

I already mentioned mine went up about $78k but in terms of liquid assets that I could use to fund a lifestyle/years of expenses the increase is under $5k. Sure I've got cash offsetting the mortgage but I wouldn't consider it liquid becasue it will increase net debt if withdrawn.

There's net worth...and there's liquid net worth.

Mortgage paydown: +$55,246
Liquid assets: +$30,492

Net worth January 2013 minus January 2012 net worth divided by Net Worth January 2012 x 100

(I.e. how much it went up over how much you started with, then turn to a percent)

E.x. net worth was 75k, went up to 100k after a year.  (100-75)/75 = 0.33 x 100 = 33% gain.
