2013 and earlier - lost in the mists of time, but basically broke grad students, though in 2010 we did manage to pay off our $150k condo. No real investing until 2014 as we were mostly unaware of how to go about it.
2014  $27k  - DW finishes postdoc and promptly retires after a 2 year academic career. Kid #2 born.
2015  $71k
2016  $219k
2017  $254k
2018  $381k
2019  $365k  - Move to a new neighborhood, Kid #3 born.
2020  $401k
2021  $569k
2022  $773k  - I "retire" as well to 1 day/week or so of work, move to a new state.
2023  $887k  - watch money continue to pile up, ponder where to settle permanently due to school problems in ski towns.
2024  $830k  - a drop! But that's because we moved and bought another house into which we put down about $300k on. So now we have way, way too much in RE but c'est la vie.

Loving everyone’s updates, particularly after such a great year in the markets.

Year     Net Assets  Movement
2012    $440k
2013    $585k        $145k     +33%
2014    $791k        $206k     +35%
2015    $788k        $(3)k      +0%     (sold first home and bought second home/PPOR. Paid roughly $100k in transaction costs)
2016   $1,039k      $251k     +32%
2017   $1,304k      $265k     +25%
2018   $1,343k      $ 39k      +3%     (major house renovation when house values were decreasing)
2019   $1,626k      $283k     +21%
2020   $1,831k      $205k     +13%
2021   $2,480k      $650k     +35%     (insane COVID house price and share market increases)
2022   $2,287k      $(193)k     -8%     (single income and house and share market decreases)
2023   $2,370k        $83k      +4%     (single income, share market increases, no change to house price)
2024   $2,770k.     $400k.     +17%
All of this is without any savings for the last 3 years, and in fact spending more than we earn.
I am hoping that 2025 is the year we start saving again and not spend more than we earn, ideally while continuing to see capital gains and good returns on our existing investments.

Here's a fifteen year recap!

Year  Net Worth   % Gain

2010    $246
2011    $323      31%
2012    $470      46%
2013    $716      52%
2014    $894      25%
2015     $1,019    14%
2016     $1,208    19%
2017     $1,519    26%
2018     $1,640    8%
2019     $2,046    25%  (FIREy year)
2020     $2,081    2%
2021     $2,655    28%
2022     $2,281    -14%
2023     $2,622    15%
2024     $2,930    12%

2024 was an excellent year, 12% gain with expenses far exceeding cash inflows.   The total gain is behind the market as a good chunk of our net worth is in a free and clear house without any appreciation, which combined with a bond allocation and being a net spender.

+$49k this year—twice what I gained the previous year, and without the gifts/inheritance that padded my numbers that year!

It seems that after a couple years of paying my dues, I have finally achieved career liftoff. Having a proper income sure is nice!

Finally went back into my easily accessible data to compile the data.  My spouse passed away in early 2022 and I inherited a sizable traditional 401k, so that was added into this year's numbers on the last line.

Historic solo account changes:

2002-2011 - went from nothing to 119,519.  It was in the 30-40K range in 2008 during the housing market crash IIRC.
2012 - up by 63,422
2013-2018 - up by 190,707 - average 31,784 per year, some years less, some more.
2019 - up 142,852
2020 - up 96,800
2021 - up 158,203
2022 - up 55,872 solo accounts only, portfolio was down but I added more money than it lost.

2023 as of market close the Friday before Christmas
Original solo accounts - up 237,870
Combined with inherited account YTD - up 350,923
Amount added this year was 60,585 so the market did most of the lifting.

This year has been wild.  I credit it to continuing to add during market slumps, for extra rebound bounce.

2024 - Up by 337,371
Invested - savings total for this year to $52,541.
Returns - 284,830

Slightly less increase this year than last, but I’ll take it.

2013 - $10k?
2014 - $49k
2015 - $101k
2016 - $180k
2017 - $288k
2018 - $318k
2019 - $442k
2020 - $575k
2021 - $775k
2022 - $697k
2023 - $917k
2024 - $1,111k

Net worth is up $194k YoY. Added about $113k, siphoned off about $40k (transaction costs for buying a house), then assets are up about $120k. Joined the two comma club this year! Expenses are rather higher now with the new house, but feels nice to be putting down roots and it comes with lots of projects to putter on, so I'm comfortable with the tradeoff there

Down 16% in 2022. 2021 was up 46%.

It'd look better if we weren't paying uncle sam too many dollars this year (like... way too many dollars) to ensure we'd hit safe harbor if my RSUs were worth this year what they were last year. At one point the stock was worth about 5% of 2021 share price, so... yeah. Way way way too many dollars to the fed. We'll get them back in April at least.

Does not include any housing appreciation, because zillow isn't accurate enough to be relevant to major life decisions, like "can we FIRE?"

I missed the memo last year.

2021: +46%
2022: -16%
2023: +44%
2024: +27%

27% looks a little sad next to 44% in 2023, but it represents nearly the same number of little green soldiers joining my brigade due to the expansion of the denominator in 2024, so... can't complain on that front. I'd planned to FIRE this year, but with the incoming administration, I don't fully trust the state of the ACA or SS to be what our current projections assume. Thus I'm taking a wait-and-see/omy approach. Fat-fire here I come?

31% increase, but even more exciting than that is that my net worth increased by 1.4X my gross salary for the year.

2024 had my NW go up $111k, first time ever it’s gone up by 6 figures, and considering I don’t even take home 6 figures and only contributed maybe 30-something-k, that’s a pretty amazing year. I’ve decided to use the bump to put a down payment on a house this month.

My net worth is my emergency fund, the cash I keep on hand for basic expenses, and my retirement accounts. I rent, so no mortgage or home value to consider.

12/17: $44k
12/18: $70k (+$26k)
12/19: $118k (+$48k)
12/20: $192k (+$74k)
12/21: $266k (+$74k)
12/22: $274k (+$8k)
12/23: $358k (+$84k)
12/24: $462k (+$104k)

I only saved $34k this year, so it's kind of wild that my net worth went up by more than my salary (and more than $100k!). Compounding really starting to do the work.

I invested just under $42k of my earnings this year. Very cool to see the market making me as much as I saved.

We are down about 45k from this same time last year.

We don't count real estate gains in that number though. If we counted house appreciation we'd be up about 50k.

Whoa! we are up 460k since I posted in 2022.

I always feel poor so nice to look at that huge increase! I know we aren't poor by any stretch, but with inflation and kids our initial FIRE number was not realistic so we're still living frugal and just piling up money in 401ks, so it feels poor.

Year   Ending NW     Change
2014   $125,000       +$55,000
2015   $133,000       +$8,000
2016   $171,000       +$38,000
2017   $231,000       +$60,000
2018   $255,000       +$24,000
2019   $273,000       +$18,000
2020   $373,000       +$100,000
2021   $640,000       +$235,000
2022   $638,700       -$1,300
2023   $905,900       +$267,200
2024   $1,118,300    +$212,400

2024 was the third year out of the last four that we saw 200K+ gains in our NW. Pushed us up into the 2-comma club early in the year, and never dipped below. Next big goal is to get $1 million in liquid investments. Stocks account for $675K at the moment, while equity in a timberland investment is valued at $167K. Home equity ($245K) and uninvested cash make up the remainder.

2023: $329,837

2024: NW increase of $307,072

This is with 20k less from my contributions than last year (about 60k vs 80k).

I'm going to take house equity out of the 'stache total next year so it may decelerate a little, but it's nice to see growth totaling twice my earned income!

December 2021:  $606,664  (up $214,413)
December 2022:  $742,242 (up $135,578).  (Government ERP program rained money out of the sky.)
December 2023:  $936,189 (up $193,947)
It's also weird that there's a decent chance that we will become millionaires in 2024.  Woahhh.

Well we did become millionaires in 2024!  We also had a baby!  Woohoo!

December 2024:  $1,129,727.97 (up $181,444.44)

Well we barely save money now, so lol the gains are just thanks to farm loan paydown and market gains at this point.  In 2024, we saved $18,190, our investments went up $127,000, and paid down the farm loans by $17,000.  I started a HYSA for our very large pile of savings* that brought in around $5,000 in interest.  And $15,000 was put aside for college that was "floating" in our checking account. That is not something I'm going to get into explaining lol.  Overall a good year, but as I said savings that we do are a small part.

*The farm had a profit of $250,000 in 2023, and in 2024 it's shaping up to have a slight loss.  2025 looks grim (because we use the income from the 2024 crop).  So, I keep a very large pile of cash in case there's several bad years in a row.  You can weather one bad year with a LOC, but not 3.  The pile of savings is for that eventuality.

2024 overview:

Retirement: $771k
Cash and equiv: $240k (going to be buying an investment property in 2025 otherwise this amount would be much lower and taxable investments would be higher)
Taxable investments: $220k
TOTAL: $1.231M

Home: 1.45M (discount from closest comp that sold down my street for 1.575); less $589k mortgage, 25 yrs left at 2.5%; 860k equity
Other debt: $36k, solar loan plus car

Total Net Worth: About 1.2M excluding home equity, ~2.05M including. Progress has slowed with two toddlers around now (4 and 2), but picking back up over the last six months and kindergarten awaits next fall!

Also have $600k of granted but not vested RSUs/profit sharing between the mrs. and myself that isn't counted. I was including a portion of unvested RSUs in prior years which I don't want to be doing going forward.

Jan 1, 2019: $419k ($284k in investments, $135k in home equity)
Jan 1, 2020: $654k ($434k in investments, $220k in home equity)
Jan 1, 2021: $1,016k ($751k in investments, $265k in home equity)
Jan 1, 2022: $1,447k ($947k in investments, $500k in home equity using a 5% discount from the avg of Zillow & Redfin's estimates for my house)

Change of $431k or 42%. Need a 38% increase to hit 2mm this year. Seems highly unlikely but will give it our best!

In millions
12/16 $1.31
12/17 $1.49
12/18 $1.59
12/19 $1.79 Smoke break due to cancer
12/20 $2.43
12/21 $2.78
12/22 $2.85
12/23 $3.11 Back to work after smoke break to pay for college
12/24 $3.70. 19% increase in net worth. We are happy with that number given $125K in OOS college expenses for 2 kids in 2024 we cash flowed.  I continued working part time to pay tuition and will probably do another OMY of part time to get to my 55 early retirement funds access.  Once bonuses for 2025 come in, we will reevaluate (bonus is target at his salary).  Part time was better in 2024, but still not as fun or level of hours as it should have been for the amount I get paid. DH is loving his job though and we get to do lots of travel with it.  My job gives me the flexibility to travel with DH, so we kind of springboard vacations through business travel. Travel is a life goal for us, so getting paid to do so is even better.  DH says he doesn't want to retire early because he's having too much fun. I have some aging family members who may require more of my time/efforts in 2025. We will see how things pan out.
