By the power of social capital, I have been able to prevent the expenditure of my own monetary capital.
I'm currently a Master in teaching student, and this program lit a not altogether unreasonable desire within me to posses a briefcase and a laptop for school. Being the type that really, really, really hates spending money, it occurred to me that perhaps instead of scouring the local thrift stores and craigslist for these two items, I might perhaps be able to acquire them- for free- via my social networks.
Two facebook posts and a couple days later, and I now have 3 briefcases from which to choose, and a quite functional laptop. All for free, and one was even mailed to me. I did drive twice, but both were at least half visits with friends and family, so I'm ok with that.
