The Crocs are dead... Long live the Crocs!
« on: May 10, 2022, 08:46:40 PM »
As a bit of therapy, I confess I have a thing about Crocs shoes.   And just semi-retired a pair I've worn DAILY at least 9 months of the year (with socks in the winter of course) that lasted 4 years and they cost about $45 including tax back then.   Over 48 months, that's less than $1 per month for almost year round blissful comfort!  They went through hiking, boating, walking on asphalt 2 or 3 times a day through COVID, gardening and yard projects... you name it.  Slave to fashion NOT of course, but comfy.

Even better, they had a separate tougher sole insert that's worn down, but still useful so they live on now as yard and painting shoes.  The baddassity is finding a brand new pair almost the same at Nordstrom Rack for $37...   Just reduced the cost of happy feet to less than $1 per month!

I love my Crocs. Especially the "fancy" ones that I can get away with wearing in work. :-)

I've never tried them because they look like they run wide, but I agree that good shoes are worth the money, and a good sale is icing on the cake.

I had a pair of Hunter wellie boots that I purchased for maybe $100. Those lasted me for 11 years until the tread was smooth, and I even wore them with boot socks in winter because I could plow through a snowbank without worrying about my pant legs. They were completely waterproof and actually comfortable.

Last year, I found a pair on sale for $70 at Nordstrom Rack. Now I have excellent, comfortable rainboots for another decade or more. They've come in very handy this spring.

I have the Schechter's version of Crocs. I love them as outdoor slippers , they go inside and outside, slide right on and off and remain by the door. I hate that I have to put on my sneakers just to run out to the yard or to my mailbox or to talk to a neighbor. They are so comfortable esp with sox on. I have at times showed up at a party or store wearing them by mistake. Don't like to be seen in Croc's with socks, Ha HA

As a bit of therapy, I confess I have a thing about Crocs shoes.

I got a used pair as hand-me-downs for my kid when he was very small, and they became his default shoe. I buy him one pair a year. In the winter, he wears them with wool socks unless it's actually wet outside.

I may be biased but I swear they are so uncool, they're cool again. I ended up getting myself a pair and I put them on the minute I get home from work. I also have their rain boots and I have done 10-mile hikes in them. They're amazing!

Count me in as a Crocs fan.  Unfortunately I never see them in thrift stores in my size, but I got some from ebay on the cheap.  They were supposed to be used, but had no signs of wear.

I have three pairs!  One pair for the house (I have a no street shoes in the house custom), one pair for the yard, and one pair for the basement.  The ones I wear in the yard get pretty muddy and grassy and having a separate pair for the basement avoids tracking that dirt there.

We all got knock-off Crocs from Aldi last year and wear them out in public a lot more than several people thought they would. ;-)

I'm not a fan of the ones with holes, but I do have a "professional" pair that look like Danskos.  I also used to like the wide variety of sandals they had in the summer, but they have way way cut back the selection.  I find sandals that have a piece that goes between the big toe and the next toe (aka flip flops) to be uncomfortable for me to wear, so I'm not buying what they do have left.

FWIW, the new pair is the "LiteRider" style.   Very cushy, but don't breathe as well as normal clog style crocs... there are lots of little holes in a nice subtle pattern, but no big holes on the footbed where humidity or water from outdoor adventures can escape other than run out the back of the heel.    These may become the winter "Crocs with socks"...   Unfortunately, they don't have the range of styles they did 4 years ago, so time to keep looking for the next "summer Crocs".   Buying a 2nd pair will increase my monthly rate over $1 though.   Decisions...

I confess to being a croc-addict as well. Ugly shoes, but so useful! I take them paddling over my other water shoes because they dry so easily and don't stink up after getting wet like the water shoes! They are great house slippers too!

I had some "outdoor" crocs that I had by the door to take out the trash and do minor things outside. These crocs were like 20 years old! Notice my use of past tense in the previous sentences. One time last year I went to take out the trash and after a day of rain I spontaneously decided to take a mile walk around my neighborhood. 20 year old crocs have no treading. I slipped on wet sidewalk and ended up breaking my ankle. My brother came over to visit me in my cast and quickly grabbed my 20 year old crocs and threw them in the trash right in front of my tear-filled eyes. I know he was right, but it was painful.

I have new crocs with good treading, but now I am careful to use the new ones for real outdoor walking.

Fun fact, you can "retread" crocs by holding a 3" screw in a pair of pliers, heating the screw up with a lighter or torch, and scorching new treads into the bottom of the crocs. Only do this outdoors.

Ha, I wasn't going to mention it, but you went there! You can also wait until you go camping at a campground with iron fire rings. Then when the fire has burned low, press the Crocs into the hot fire ring in neat rows.

Haven't done this in a few years because the kid tends to grow out of his about the same time he wears them smooth.

That sounds like something a ChpBstrd would say...

Been awhile, so an update on Croc-life… Bought 2 pairs on clearance… The “All-Terrain”
version is awesome so far… great on rocks and trails.  For $34, good for another 5 years?   awesome!!

I bought the kid his annual pair. He continues to forget they exist and wear the old ones. Also an older cousin handed down a pair he didn't like. We've never been so Croc-abundant.
