My adventures in credit card retention offers
« on: July 05, 2018, 11:07:47 PM »
I called up Chase, Citi and Discover. Asked for retention department nicely and then proceeded to ask what retention offers were available on my cards. I politely said I was reviewing which cards I am keeping and which cards I will be using. Sometimes the CSR would ask point blank are you considering closing this card? As if I had to say yes for them to give me the offer. I would politely say I am considering it.

Offers:
Chase (Sapphire preferred and freedom) no offer
Discover: 3% extra cash back (on top of existing 1% and 5% offers) for the next six months up to $2500 spend. So next quarter I get 8% cash back on amazon. If I do this it is $200 cash back.
Citi: one card they offered me a 12 mo 0% balance transfer. The other card they offered me $150 cash back for $3000 spend in the next 6 mo (5%)

So I am probably going to get $350 cash back bonuses for this adventure.

Yeah! Nice job. It never hurts to ask. I periodically get statement credits and/or points to retain my cards but have found that Chase and Amex are getting stingier. Great job with your offers!

It's always worth a shot. I've found Citi to be the most generous, Chase and Amex not so much. Citi will sometimes give you multiple retention bonuses on the same card, in the same year...

There are threads on FlyerTalk reporting recent retention offers that are useful to see if it's worth calling:

Amex: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/american-express-membership-rewards/1812751-american-express-retention-offers.html

Chase: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/1710270-chase-retention-bonus-offers-june-2015-present-except-sapphire-reserve-58.html

Citi: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/citi-thankyou-rewards/1739967-citi-retention-offer-reports-all-cards-2016-2017-a-20.html

Great resources here! I got a Capital One bonus retention offer not too long ago, have to look into the others. Thanks for sharing.

Nicely done!  I've never thought of this!  I'll have to do more research, and call up some companies :)

I checked with Bank of America and they would not offer me anything on my no annual cards in terms of bonus points or cash back on my cards with them.

So yes Citi and Discover were best with me so far.

I did not try Amex yet as I just got the PGR 2 months ago and just got the 50k point bonus for 1k spend and don’t want to look ridiculous asking for a retension bonus after I just got that :)

Thanks for the links to retention offer info.  I just called for my SPG personal card and was offered $75 statement credit for 2K spend over next three months.  I went ahead and accepted.  That offsets most of the annual fee of $95 and after Aug 1 they are adding an annual free night certificate after renewal, so next April will get an extra free night.
