OK. I just biked in - I feel like i should start another thread "Fuck it!  - I'm biking!".

My first real bike ride since i was about 12. It took me 24 minutes to make the 3.5 miles... seems kinda bad.

I almost died going up the "hills" that are overpasses to freeways cause my front derailer wouldn't work so i was doing all out hard pedalling and my legs are jelly now:) Turns out biking my 300 lbs up a hill isn't as effortless as all the badass bikers make it look when I'm driving :) I was also really wobbly sometimes.

That being said, I feel pretty good for making it. Now I'm going to relax at work/do some emails to recoup and head back.

PS Everyone, PRIMM, Bob W, et al. you are totally keeping me motivated to keep going! Next week I'm going to try to walk and bike on alternate days since I think my legs will be too sore from biking.

Congrats on making it!  FWIW, there is no shame is getting off the bike and walking it up hills you know you're not capable of doing yet.  Take it nice and easy.  No sense in not being able to walk tomorrow and preventing you from riding again just to prove you can make it up a hill.

Not really related but this thread keeps reminding me of the final lines of one of my favorite movies, Midnight Run. (It's a bit like Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, plus the mafia.) *spoiler alert*
Jack (Robert DeNiro) has gone through an incredibly rough week but his adventure finally ends with him having tens of thousands of dollars in cash. He taps on a taxi's window and asks if he has change for a thousand. The taxi driver says, "What are you, a comedian? Get outta here!" And Jack, zipping up his jacket, says, "Looks like I'm walking." So basically he's got too much money to take a taxi.

LOVE this! Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress dividendman!

Excellent suggestions on the PF on this thread. After years of being a barefoot chipmunk, I'm now a devotee of Birkenstocks and Superfeet inserts. No more cheap shoes for me. Other things that keep me mobile:
doing the alphabet in the air with my feet (best to do first thing in the morning before getting out of bed), yoga, wall stretches while brushing teeth, self massage on feet and legs and staying hydrated. I love the "Melt Method" balls because they come in various densities and have exercises. But you could learn what the exercises are and find other, cheaper balls and rock the frugal genes.

Yep. I've been bike commuting for 10 years, but I still have to walk up part of the hill on Yesler in Downtown Seattle.

Every time you ride just a little farther up the hill, eventually you'll make it all the way.  But it's certainly easier with gears!

I walked down to the store yesterday for some bolts and nuts, as I was too lazy to walk back up my driveway to the house to get my bike.  Also I had coveralls on and didn't want to bike in them.  I like both modes anyway.

Thank you Dividend Man you are an inspiration to me.   I concur that walking up hill is a good option.  No shame in it.

Regarding the PF == Funny but I came across my Birks a week or so ago and have been wearing them everyday and night.   Seems the way they cradle my heal and the high arch are perfect and my PF symptoms seem to have dissipated.   (placebo?)  So anyway, my boss says, I didn't know you were a hippy?   I explain PF situation and she gets real empathetic.  Says she has it twice and goes on about how painful it is and how it sucks.   So now I don't feel underdressed wearing the Birks to work everyday.

Fuck it - I'm Birkenstocking it!

A professional bike tune up will also make a huge difference in ride quality and enjoyment, could be a very good 40-50$ spent depending on your level of knowledge and tools on hand.  They also might spot a nearly broken brake cable that you missed.

If you do start riding more learn how to change a flat and carry the tools/tube with you.  Probably a few threads on here you should read before riding outside walking distance if you have not ridden since you were 12.

so far you sound very awesome!  keep it up!

@Bob W,

Yes! to Birks! My family doc recommended them for around the house wear when I wasn't wearing my shoes with the custom inserts. Sort of like Birkenstock slippers.  It helped me a lot, especially in the summertime when we tend to cast off shoes and go barefoot, which is a real no-no sufferers of plantar fasciitis!

@dividendman

Thanks for the encouragement, especially with the hills! I've been afraid to go out of my own little neighbourhood due to the hills. But I'm only 1 big hill from a Walmart Supercenter and other shops, but still drive :-(

@1967mama - don't worry about it. Bike what  you can and make small increases as suggested by others here.

@AlanStache yeah, I'm going to have to go to some biking forums or something. I feel like cars are going to hit me on overpasses where there is no bike lane (or sidewalk) and I'm already slow and crappy and about to fall, haha. I know the fear is mostly unfounded, but those cars shoot off the freeway into my lane so fast!

I am probably going to chicken out tomorrow and take the longer more bike friendly route.

Some roads should not be ridden by anyone any time.  Some roads can only be ridden sometimes by some riders.  This is just a sad fact on US roads.  Part of learning to ride a bike is learning where and when you can/should go.

I just walked from luxor in las vegas to the airport. My company would have paid for a cab or shuttle but it just felt wrong when i can walk. It was only 2.5 miles but the luggage made it a little more challenging. I probably would have chickened out in the summer though.

Did not see anyone else walking here. a few people walking to work in the other direction (im guessing works since they did not have suitcases or anything). I am enjoying watching these people who are out of breath from just walking in the terminal.

Luxor to the Airport is pretty badass!

Folks, I have some bad news. My bad-ass walking days are over.

On the plus side biking is AMAZING! Why didn't you all tell me it's the best shit on earth?! :P

1) I can drive to work in 15-20 mins during rush hour since i have like 11 lights on my 3 mile drive. Biking takes me 25 mins, 3 lights since I found an awesome bike path/side street route
2) My work has awesome showers! So I get the plus of using work facilities for showering. They are right in my building!
3) I have a BIKE LOCKER at work! Yup, it's a bigass locker where only I (and the facilities guy I suppose) has the key and it's fully enclosed. I guess I'm just a fruit loop for being excited over that.
4) Um.... biking is awesome? Why did i stop when I was 12?

I'm 100% sure I can get away with 1 day or less car usage per week given biking.

EDIT: Any suggestions on what the best bike lock is? That's the last thing I need before I start doing non-work travels.

:-)

locks:  no lock is made from unobtanium, all can be cut/broke.  Depends on how much weight you want to carry and how badly you dont want your bike stolen; is all one big cost-benefit.  Long cables can get through the easily removable wheels but are bigger and harder to bundle up.

Do you have/need lights?  Are good for being seen by cars, can get ok rechargeable ones fairly cheap.

Thanks AlanStache! I have lights, I got them when I bought my bike from nashbar, they are very bright and blinky (got headlight and taillight), I also bought a larger saddle (look at me using bike terms) because I'm fat as shit but I think the smaller one that came with the bike might be better.

I also was a total newbie and screwed up a couple of things like my saddle height and handlebars when I first went biking last weekend to test my work route. I went on youtube and readjusted a bunch o crap and it was way easier/funner today even though I haven't fixed my front derailer. Doing all these adjustments and shit myself makes me feel pretty good too :D

So yeah, biking is the greatest.

What tools should I keep in my backpack? I got the nashbar bike toolkit http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_524452_-1but don't want to carry all if it. Worst case I can still walk my bike if it breaks since all of my travels are < 4 miles one way generally anyway (I started this thread cause I drove < 12k miles in 3 years!!)

I've totally hijacked my own thread (again).

I'm so stoked over biking! I have bike lanes for most of my route and I love getting passed by a car, then having it stop at a 20+ car pile up at a light, and then pass em all and get the green and beating  them to the next light. I remember being in my 300 HP Charger and bikes passing me while I'm in traffic thinking "that damn bike is going to beat me home", now I'm the bike! wooooo.

I *love* this thread.

I live in a walkable area and refuse to drive once home unless I am going about 10 miles away.

My neighbors and I had to go to the local bank which was about a mile away. They were totally shocked when I showed up walking. They offered to drive me back. I told them I happily walked there. They had to pay parking and everything. Another time we were going just a few blocks away to look at another building for some fix they did and we needed. I thought it was ridiculous that they both got into the car to go, and I just walked there and got there before them (it was hot in the summer but who cares). I tell others how walkable my area is, then have to preface it by saying I love to walk so maybe others wouldn't think it was walkable.

I also walk to places around work to pick up stuff or just take a walk, especially when the weather is awesome like it is this time of year. Unfortunately work is NOT walkable from home (almost 30 miles away). Others actually drive across the street to go to the restaurants.

This thread is inspiring me to walk 8 miles to the movie theater when I go see the Oscars marathon next month. I will be sitting in a theater for the whole day so walking there will give me some exercise. That is something I wouldn't have thought of before reading this thread.

Tools: a mini tool kit, (something like "Park I-Beam Mini (IB-3) Fold-Up Bike Tool with Chain Tool") tire levers, tube patch kit, a spare tube, small pump are about all most carry.  Make sure you know how to change a flat.  Lots of guys will leave a 20$ in the patch kit box - could be very helpful on a bad day.  All that is based on the idea that you cant just walk home.

Also locks: At home if you keep the bike in the garage consider locking the bike up at home too, is very easy to walk into a garage and ride off with someones bike.

You can now edit the thread title to read Fuck it - I'm Walking and Biking!

Good for you!  I'm so glad you are excited about biking.  You mentioned replacing car ride 1 time per week--- why not everyday for your commute?

Also,  I would continue walking for a couple of miles per day as an exercise and to keep in the getting fit mode you are adopting.  Perhaps for lunch and a couple of 15 minutes breaks per day.

Keep on trying new stuff my friend.  Next thing we know the thread title might be changing to Fuck it I going Paleo!

What I meant was 1 day or LESS of using a car, aka 6 days of NOT using a car a week! So mostly biking everywhere! Biked in again today!

Yeah, I am on a paleo-ish diet but I have trouble sticking to it. I just had a bagel :(

Just read this whole thread and have to say I'm awed by your badassity DividendMan.  I am looking for a bike for myself for errands.  Will probably end up getting one from REI at their 20% off sale.  I am short and it is hard to find a used one that I am comfortable riding.

Bob,  I too had PF years ago.  Was told by my Dr. to ALWAYS were shoes with arch support, even in the shower.  Now I only have 3 types of shoes:  Birkenstocks, tennis shoes and hiking boots.  The thing that helped me the most, for immediate relief was acupuncture.  Wearing shoes with good support it what has kept it from ever coming back.

Daisy, go for it! Walking is pretty relaxing for me. I walked to this market that's not even 2 miles away to get some fruits and veggies today.

I have also found that thinking about biking to work tomorrow is curing my Sunday Blues! http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/sunday-bluesdread

I'm rocking the birks today as I have been for 2+ weeks.  I hardly notice the PF at this point although it is still there.   I'll need to find some decent high arch tennis or walking shoes as the birks are impractical for walking any significant distance.   I am also doing the stretches and ABC foot exercised mentioned by others.

Dividend man I'm so glad you are rocking it!   I'm living a little vicariously through you for the moment and really hoping my PF clears up enough by early spring to do some real walking again.

How is the weight going?   I seem to remember you dropping a huge  amount the first week in.

I think this story fits this thread pretty well:

http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/oakland/2015/01/31/detroit-commuting-troy-rochester-hills-smart-ddot-ubs-banker-woodward-buses-transit/22660785/

The gist of the story?  A Detroit man walks 21 miles a day from his home in the metro area to his factory job in Rochester Hills, MI.  Of course there's a GoFundMe campaign to buy the dude a car.  But he'e pretty badass and would probably get by just fine with a bike. :-P

Yeah, overall in Jan I lost about 17 lbs... I have a lot of lbs though :)

I'm also still not eating very "healthy" but trying to be paleoish and only eating noon to 8pm

Good for you!  Intermittent feeding is a nice rhythm to be in.   Restricting white carbs (mainly potatoes)  to 1 time per day should help.   Paleo rocks.  You probably have seen them already,  but check the success stories at Marks Daily Apple if you haven't.   Thanks for responding!

Guide to reaching Financial Independence:
Spend less money than you make, invest consistently.

Guide to loosing weight:
Eat fewer calories than you expend, exercise consistently.

There are F-tons of detailed of ways to do these but that is basically it.

If your spending is out of whack investing wont get you there, if you are eating to much exercise wont get you there.

With the caveat that all investments are not equal.   Like wise all calories are not equal.  For instance cooked and processed (predigested essentially) take far less calories to break down in the gut than whole foods.    And of course, sugar, wheat, white carbs spike insulin wreaking havoc on the body.    Most of the successful Paleo folks don't even count calories.

That and 80% of weight loss is diet.  But definitely keep with the biking and walking. (just don't count those as some sort of magic calorie burning machines)

"Like wise all calories are not equal"

Calories are by definition all created equal, a calorie is a unit of energy.
"Like wise all kelograms are not equal" - no.  A Kg is a Kg, 1kg of iron may be easier to transport than 1kg of feathers but 1kg of feathers is not heavier.

How the calories are taken into the body can affect the amount of stored (if any) energy.  But that goes in to the "calories than you expend" side of the equation.

Interestingly enough, the days I bike or do significant physical activities are the days I eat pretty healthy/not too much. Why? Because my weirdo logic goes like this:
Well, I've already exercised (since I biked in) so I don't want to "ruin" that exercise by eating pizza at lunch. And then since I have to bike home, I figure I might as well keep being healthy to not ruin my bike ride home and I cook dinner and use the leftovers for lunch the next day creating a virtuous cycle.

If I haven't exercised then it goes:
Well, shit, I didn't exercise so fuck it - having a pizza. Then, since I didn't bike in, I don't bike home, eat dinner out or eat garbage, dont' have leftovers, creating a downward spiral.

Haha, I sound like a crazy fuck now that I wrote that but that's how my simple brain computes things.

Weird but true (at least for me).

You don't sound crazy AT ALL! What you wrote made perfect sense to me and I could totally relate to it! Thanks for posting!

This is a great thread. I am not quite ready to walk or bike to work. Don't trust the drivers on my way there, but I have been walking to the local grocery a mile away. Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration.

So the world tried to screw me out of biking this week... but I said... fuck you world!

I got a flat on the way home on tuesday due to running over some glass.... welp, walking 45 mins home with my bike wasn't that fun but I learned how to change the inner tube and patch it!

So... I feel pretty good about that. Back to biking!

Sucks, but you did not call a cab.  Star thistle will also get bike tubes.

Why can't they just make the inner tubes super hard to puncture but also easy to inflate somehow... and light.... haha, yeah, pipe dream.

I used this stuff once on the recommendation of a friend. It's freaking amazing! I always carry a can now, no need to change the tyre or anything. As luck would have it I haven't had another flat since he let me use his. But if I do I'm good. :)

Used Fix A Flat on all my car leaks for 20 years.  Works great.  I'm sure the canned stuff for bikes would unless the tire is slashed.   Worth a try.

I agree what the definition of a calorie is.   But I also know that it is  a very bad measure of the effect substances have on the body.  It should never have been adopted as some kind of human fat potential measurement.   It is pretty much bullshit IMHO and should be thrown on the trash heap of medical pseudo science.   Thankfully people eating a paleo diet don't bother counting calories and are more concerned with the nutritionally content of their foods than how much energy they emit when burned with a flame.
