Title: Mustachian Apprentice - the Jack of All Trades Edition
Post by: monkeymind on September 11, 2016, 12:26:51 PM
This weekend, I...

-Replaced the switch to my garbage disposal
-Made delicious sourdough bread from my own "pet" starter that I've been growing for a month
-Made homemade yogurt in my Instant pot
-And fixed a slow leak in my toilet that wasn't due to the flapper

The mustache boards (and lots of youtube videos and how-to sites) helped to make all of those things happen.

This place rocks!

Nice!

My contribution this weekend is that I un-jammed my impact drill. It's one of those Black and Decker drills where you can swap out the business end of the tool with a different attachment. I didn't realize that the impact drill attachment requires a different type of bit, and got a regular screwdriver bit jammed in there. I needed to build 3 new racks for firewood, and the regular drill attachment would not drive the screws through pressure treated lumber. So I placed the chuck in a vise and used my linesman's pliers to pull on the bit. It came out! Then I built the 3 racks and my wife filled up 2-1/4 of them with firewood.

One task that I did not get to is fixing my leaking kitchen faucet. It has a ball valve for hot/cold, plus a sprayer that is built into the faucet. Previously I opened it up and tightened the nut that holds the ball valve in place (IIRC), but it started leaking again a few months later. I've had a hard time finding good info about how to narrow down the problem, so if anyone has tips, they would be much appreciated.

I removed our old dishwasher and installed the new one by myself.  It involved drilling new holes in the floor and walls to run the water and power lines since the new models were laid out very differently.  Saved a few hundred bucks on delivery and installation and learned something new!

Very cool!  I love hearing from other mustachians who take on challenges yourselves.  Plenty of times,  professional help is NOT required.  Sometimes, all that's necessary is a little faith in yourself and a willingness to put in the time and energy to learn.

You inspire me!

I'd be interested in ideas on fixing faucets, too.  I learned how not to fix a faucet when a friend took one apart and couldn't get it together again without it leaking even worse.  I wonder what the tricks are to doing it right.
