Hey everyone, just kinda figured this out a few weeks ago and thought I'd share with money saving mustachians. If you have or can get the American express blue cash preferred card, a vons near you and a chevron gas station you can potentially save 11+% on gas, here is how. This might not help too many people who bike, but unfortunately i have to drive a lot to work (about 80 miles a day total, while it's antimustachian i do get paid for the driving and it's actually more than it cost me so not too bad)
Amex blue cash preferred offers 6% cashback at groceries up to $6,000 per year ($500 a month), Vons has a partnership with chevron where if you get 100 points at vons (by spending 100 dollars) you earn $0.10 off per gallon at your next fill up, or you can save 200 points for $0.20 off per gallon. The neat part is that vons actually gives you 4x the points if you purchase gift cards, even better they offer chevron gift cards!!!!
So here is what i do, buy $50 chevron gift card, i earn 6% cashback on the gift card (it rings up as groceries since it's purchased at vons, it does i've done it many times with multiple gift cards). I earn 50x4=200 vons points. I go pump gas and get $0.20 off per gallon.
For my $50 gift card (which actually cost me $47 after my 6% back) i get $50/($3.50-$0.20)=15.15 gallons of gas
Without the $0.20 off 15.15 gallons would have cost me $53.03
So for $53.03 worth of gas purchased i only paid $47, saving me 11.3% or you can look at it as getting 11.3% cashback after spending $53.03
