Minor victory
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:26:29 AM »
So, my back gets messed up periodically, and I find it uncomfortable to sit at a desk for any period of time.  I have a standing desk at work, but I needed to work at home yesterday and today, and not surprisingly, by lunchtime yesterday my hip had pretty much locked up.  I tried to stand at the kitchen counter, but it was too low.

Et voila, the solution (photo attached):  pan, turned upside down.  Handles aren't completely flat, so rotated pan so they stuck out over edge of countertop and sink.  Silicone potholder to prevent slippage.  Laptop.  Plug below.  Happy Laura, less pissed-off-back.  ;-)

You must not be very clumsy! All I can imagine is trying to type something up and having the whole thing flip over. Is it not wobbly?

Nope -- that's actually why I chose the pan with the funky handles, because it is wide-diameter and has a very wide, flat bottom, and the silicone potholder really holds my laptop in place surprisingly well.  I'd say the proof of the pudding is in the eating:  I am in no way coordinated and do many, many clumsy an physically stupid things all the time (like walk through a doorway and try to leave my shoulder or little toe behind), and yet two days in, I haven't knocked it off yet.  But as a test, I just now lifted up my left hand entirely and slammed my right finger down to the right of the return key about 10x harder than I'd ever do when actually typing.  The left side of the laptop lifted about 1/4" and plopped right back into place.

ETA:  Yeah, so now I am messing around to see what works and what doesn't.  Apparently the weight of the pot I chose is important to the stability -- I just swapped the blue pot out with a stainless steel pot with an even wider bottom, and that felt much less secure and was more likely to slip around when I was typing.  This pot is enameled cast iron and weighs a ton, so it wants to just sit there on the countertop no matter what I do on the laptop.

Telephone books/Yellow Pages (if you still get them delivered to your door) make great laptop stands. And at work, our secretary has her monitor on top of a ream of paper, to raise it just the right amount for ergonomic reasons.

If I used your desk, it would make my back hurt really bad.  That 90 degree turn to the left could result in serious spine issues.
