Major FI Milestone Completed!
« on: January 24, 2017, 11:43:32 AM »
About a year ago, I stumbled across the MMM website and decided it was time to right a lot of past financial wrongs.  Aside from dramatically under-performing in the spend/save department, I had about $50K in student loans festering in my life.

Against what some people would recommend, I decided to go full-on into debt killing mode, and throw all of my discretionary income at this bill until it was paid off.

Somehow along the way, I got my wife to buy into the philosophy, and get her car loan and student debt paid off as well.  To be honest, we got a somewhat unexpected assist when her Grandfather passed away and left us enough money to pay off our student loans about 6 months earlier than we would've otherwise. That was MUCH appreciated.

Now that we've turned the corner, we're both replenishing a minimal emergency fund, and then amping up our investments to somewhere in the neighborhood of 55/60%.  That, along with current investments and some luck should reasonably get us to FI in 6-8 years.

My point is not to rant or brag, but to let folks here on the forum know that making this kind of transition is possible, and it's never too late to do it
(we're 38 and 40).  I also want to express thanks for the collective knowledge I've found here, and on the blog.  It's really become a rudder in my life, and without it, I'm sure I'd still be chipping away at my debts, if not adding to them.

Thanks again to everyone out there!

Congratulations on your success.

I can completely empathize with being in debt killing mode. I am currently in that mode myself. I am probably going to pay off my house within the next 3-4 days (certainly by the end of next week), and I am going to be debt free. I am really looking forward to it.

You have made a great decision and you stuck to it. Keep up the good work, and I am sure you will achieve your dreams and goals!

Nice!  Love to hear that mindset shift.

Good luck on your FIRE journey. You may want to consider starting a journal here.  :)

First, congratulations on paying off your loans!

Next, regarding the bolded part, not paying off loans is usually only recommended when the interest rates are fixed, very low, and most importantly, if the debt load is not a financial burden to the bearer. Typically, these individuals have plenty of green soldiers earning well more in investments than they are paying in interest on their loans. Also key to note that they are not adding to these debts, just paying them down slowly and methodically, the same way they invest. I hope that's a helpful distinction.

Leverage is a great tool for creating wealth, which is the real goal.

I love the idea of a financial or even lifestyle "rudder". Great image!

Congratulations! I'm in your same age range (38) and wish I'd found MMM years sooner. Better later than not at all though, right?

Don't sweat this too much. MMM didn't even exist when I was your age. You have time, you'll get there.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and advice.  I'll take that advice and set up a journal over in that section of the forums.  True that it's better late than never.  It would've been great to already be FI, but I have a feeling 45-50 year old me will appreciate it just as much!

From deep in debt to FI in 8 or 9 years will be very impressive. Well done!
