401K fully funded for year - as of today
« on: August 23, 2017, 09:16:37 AM »
I front-loaded my 401K contributions this year and as of today I am fully funded for 2017.  This makes me exceedingly happy.  I know others here do it too, but it's kind of an exciting jolt.

Now, for the remainder of the year I'm trying to decide whether I should take the same amount and do either megabackdoor Roth or just put it into my Vanguard index funds.  I'm leaning toward the latter because I may make a job change around Q1 2018 or take a sabbatical and want the security of knowing the money is liquid.

But aren't you missing out on the company match for the remainder of the year?

+1. For instance my company will do a true-up on the missing company contributions but the catch is one has to be employed on Dec 31st. If employee quits, gets terminated, etc then they lose out any true-up they would be entitled to. Once I found that out I quit maxing my 401k early.

No, I am not missing out on any match (I know because I administer our company's plan).  Matching contributions are made at the end of the year (must be employed at 12/31) and are based on W-2 earnings for the whole year.
