Our lives have gone through some growing pains in the last few years. We were as anti-mustachian as you can get! DINKs who spent almost our entire (large) salaries. In 2010, we decided to start a family. We thought we might want to have a parent stay home, so we tried to live on one salary. We didn't quite succeed, but we did bank a lot. We had our little boy in July 2011. Per Canada's generous parental leave laws, we split up the parental leave between us, me first, then him. I did not enjoy staying home, but my spouse thought it was OK, so he became a SAHD. For close to a year, we lived above our means, dipping into our savings. In July last year, I knew there was a problem. I found a Dave Ramsey inspired web-site, started a budget on Mint and started getting our finances sorted out. Somehow, in the last year (August to August - I calculate our finances at odd times and need to be more organized, but whatever), our net worth has increased by 55% of our net income! Holy crap! And we still have some pretty un-mustachian habits that we can probably attack.
