Ultimate Stache Vacation?

For years our big annual vacation has been a weeklong wilderness backpacking trip, and I have to say it is rather badass from a mustachian perspective.

While you can spend a chunk of change on gear, you don't need to, and once you have the basics, you are set for many years to come...plus...
- You don't want to be carrying a lot of food, and most trail food can be very inexpensive so you don't spend much on supplies
- Once you buy food, cooking fuel, some replentishing of batteries, sunscreen, and such...along with gas driving to a trailhead YOU CAN'T SPEND MONEY FOR A WHOLE WEEK.  NONE!
- On top of that, you get lots of exercise (my wife and I each lost 10+ pounds on one of our trips, and we're not that big to begin with)
- And most valuable of all to us, we completely unplug, decompress, see gorgeous land, and have an exquisite time.

We have some more swanky stache vacations (mostly based on free lodging in really cool places through family and friends), but I still think this one is tops!

Absolutely.. I'm not so much into the backpacking part of it as I hate all that weight on my back.

However, car camping and maybe an over night trip (not too much gear) is nice.

The other thing we found is going to the local Indian food store where they have delicious curries, boil in the back type meals.. Much cheaper than the moutain House freeze dried stuff.

After a long day's hike a big bowl full of curry out under the setting sun.. its as close to Heaven as I can imagine..:)

This is my idea of a vacation as well.  I love hitting up national parks, too.  We are backpacking the Lost Coast Trail this September for our honeymoon.

We got most of our backpacking gear from Amazon credit earned through Swagbucks and Perk TV, probably about $1200 worth of it last year alone.

Absolutely.. I'm not so much into the backpacking part of it as I hate all that weight on my back.

You might change your mind after a few equipment upgrades.  Right now the combined weight of my backpack, tent, sleeping bag and pad add up to around 6 pounds total, and I didn't splurge on the real ultralight stuff.

We honeymooned on the wilderness coast of Olympic National Park, which was glorious.  Lost Coast is definitely on our list...

I am on board with this style vacation, though it costs me more with airfare.  Ive been planning a nice trek in the Sierra Nevada for my upcoming honeymoon. Nothing like coming back from a refreshing vacation in better shape than when you left!

While not cheap, you can get set up for around 1k.  How much does it cost to stay in a hotel and dine out for a week?

I have yet to backpack, but this so my cup of tea! Annually I do a ton of miles in Mammoth. All day hikes w camping nightly. Tis one of my Fave places ever.
