Just hit 100K :)
« on: March 10, 2017, 08:59:17 AM »
100K$ doesn't seem like much money for some people here, but for me, I never thought I would be able to achieve it with a small salary (under 40K$). I am not 100% mustachian since I am only saving around 30-40% of what I make, but nonetheless this webpage helped me see the importance to stash as much money as I can and when I started working in 2003, for a good 7 years, I never got into debt, but I never saved anything. I would be spending money on stupid stuff that I don't even remember. In 2010, I decided to start saving because I was tired of being at 0$ net worth (thankfully I didn't put myself in debt, I knew from an early age that debt was bad). However, I fell off the bandwagon in 2011 when I spent whatever money I saved (12K$ at that point) and spent it all on 3 vacations (Oh, how do I regret it). In 2012, this when I told myself that I needed to save money NOW!!!!! And ever since then, starting at nearly 0$ net worth, it took me 4-5 years to accumulate a net worth of 100K$ :) . It was during those years I discovered MMM and changed my spending habits...not to the point of being a true mustachian, but enough to at least higher up my savings rate, it is still a work in progress as I would love to higher up my savings rate, but one step at a time. I am in a better position now than I was 5 years ago. Thanks to MMM, I also learned to get rid of my bloody mutual funds that were sucking me up dry with fees and started investing with Questrade using the Canadian Couch Potato reccomendations. The difference was enormous, with Questrade, I am paying at most 10$ in fees (I don't remember the exact number, but I remember it was very low in that range), meanwhile RBC was charging me over 300$ in fees per year!!!!. Thank you everyone for inspiring with your stories and also with your wisdom. I have learned a lot from the users in this forum.

Good job Ransom!  That's pretty impressive with the lower salary.

Awesome!!

100k is a huge milestone and something many people with twice your salary would struggle to hit in 4-5 years.

Thank you, the only reason why I don't have a higher paying job is because I love what I am doing, I know that I am able to put money aside with my current salary and not feeling like a rat in a wheel.

Well done!  I'm in the same modest income bracket as you and hope to hit the 100k liquid assets mark sometime in 2021, having started saving 2.5 yrs ago.

It's a long road, but it's so worth it. I can't wait to hit the 200K now, hopefully it won't take me that long.
