Yes, I can plumb!
« on: September 30, 2015, 12:30:54 AM »
Ok so don't laugh, but I'm pretty pleased with myself this morning after fixing the toilet all by myself last night!

It's my first venture into DIY plumbing, so after couple of videos on youtube, and a quick trip to the hardware I managed to replace the mechanism inside the tank and to the total surprise of my wife, it all works :)

$13 all in all, would have probably cost about four times that to get someone in.

Youtube is my favourite learning reseource. Last weekend I also managed to replace my cars cabin air filter, so now the car smells far better too.

Edit, sorry I see there is a DIY section. Mods feel free to move this thread if needed.

It's amazing when you do a bit of plumbing and it works first time. I managed to pull some redundant piping out of the house, and cap the pipes with valves, all without breaking the floorboards and with no leaks!

Still feels odd to me that I can trust my own plumbing with the water supply turned on...

Good job! I find plumbing jobs very rewarding both monetarily and spiritually. There is nothing quite as nice as a free flowing drain and a vigorous reliable flush.

Great work!

I recently dabbled in some plumbing also.  I moved a washing machine about 8 feet and it caused quite a lot of work, but worth it.  Had to reroute the drain, redo the supply lines and move the electrical.  (All done in prep to finish the rest of the basement).  I used a product called 'sharkbite' fittings.  Was definitely not cheap, but removes any ounce of skill required to simple plumbing jobs.  And plastic tubing is much cheaper than copper so it wasn't too much more costly.

Either way, keeping professionals out of your home for relatively small tasks is great for your mind and wallet!  Expand your comfort zone and attempt those household repairs.  It's likely broke before you started anyways, so what's the worst that can happen.......

Nice one! I've dabbled in that sort of thing, changing taps, waste pipes, cisterns and toilets but electrics and plumbing beyond that are the last bastion of areas I'm willing to pay someone. Has anyone learned a really good level of plumbing or electrics, comparable to a tradie without professional training? Just youtube? Is it worth the risk on your home insurance?

I replaced all the plumbing in my tank just yesterday.  And it works!  I know how you feel!

Awww Shucks,

So I tried to unclog my bathroom yesterday morning with the plunger, failed miserably, had to leave for work as I was going to be late.  I told my wife I'd get back to it, and that we would probably need a new plunger that fits our toilet better. I asked that if she gets a chance to buy one to get it, and I'd fix it in the evening.

She texts me 20 minutes later, saying "Fixed the Toilet...it's not the size of the plunger that matters...it's how you use it..."

It still hurts a bit 30 hours later  :)
