just bragging
« on: August 27, 2014, 01:37:56 PM »
My wife and I (DINKS) started really applying ourselves and making some changes in Oct 2013. Since Jan, we've gone from $337k to $405k in investments (not including house worth ~$200k) that are making us more money. We've paid off all student loans and a $16k car loan as well. All we have left is our mortgage of $100k @ 3.5%. Next year we'll max out all tax advantages accounts and will need to start an after tax brokerage account to stash more. We both expect some raises in the future, and with no loans, those portfolio and net worth curves are about to get real steep, like into the stratosphere. It's super exciting! We hope to be FI by 40, at the latest, which is 5 years from now. We don't expect to quit cold turkey, but the freedom to lower hours and do other productive things is going to be awesome!

I'm not super active here, but I do lurk a lot, and I am constantly motivated by those that post here. I can't thank MMM and this community enough for allowing us to see an even better future ahead of us.

It's amazing how quickly you can stache as motivated DINKs. Nice work. Now stop lurking and teach us all some tricks. ; )

Well done! Any chance you are near MN? I don't know many DINKs near me, and it would be awesome to actually meet some, especially fellow mustachians.

Excellent new Tkurk!

Maintain that laser focus, put your savings on autopilot as much as possible and live life in the meantime. Remember this is not about starving or making yourselves miserable, but realising you can have almost as much fun as everyone else while spending a fraction of what they do.

Look at your investments every month or so if (if you can resist) and within a few short years you'll be there..:)

Good Job

Frank

No, not at all. We're very happy.  I think we spent $6k on fun trips this summer, which I do think is high.  I'd rather save even more of that to allow us to have more fun when our wages go away and our free time goes way up. Ah, mustachian problems, so nice to have.

Nope, we're in very expensive Alaska. One option to our FIRE plan is to eventually move back to the midwest though, as WI and MI is where we're from. Marquette MI anyone?

hmm, I just read all of MMM, and applied all of it.  I'm still working on the biking to work, but it's a habit I have to change. I'd say the biggest impact is putting everything on autopilot and living on the rest. You never miss the money if you never see it, but it will be there when we FIRE, and be many times more!

I am in iowa - a regional meet would be nice if there is enough interest.

You make it sound easy - but it isn't necessarily easy to execute all of this - so don't sell your efforts short.  Congratulations!

Thanks G-dog. Yeah, it took a bit of work, but should be smooth gliding from here on out, changing some habits along the way over time to set up a great and affordable lifestyle post FIRE. I listed some of the general financial specific things I did in a new thread.

Nice job Tkurk!  You will be there before you know it.  The double income part is hugely helpful.  We are not DINKS, rather we are DICKS...Double Income Couple of Kids, LOL...sorry, couldn't resist.  Max the 401K's/IRA's, balanced, allocated portofolios, don't micro manage it, and as someone else said...enjoy life!  Life is good when money is not something you have to worry about!  Have a great holiday w/e everyone!

We live in Olathe.  I've been here since '83 so consider KC to be home, at least until the last one is out of the house in a couple years :-)
