Caulked my own bathtub
« on: November 10, 2014, 08:04:20 PM »
Yeah, this is a pretty minor bit of "badassity", but it's big for me because I have tended to pay professional "handymen" to do this kind of stuff in the past.  I caulked our bathtub by myself instead of hiring someone.  There was a Groupon offering a "fantastic deal" to have someone come to the house and do it for us for only $150!  Yeah, right.  I just bought a tube of silicone caulk for a few bucks at Target and did it myself.

I kind of want to go back in time and give myself a few dozen face-punches for not doing this sort of thing earlier.  Better late than never, right?

Good job - not so minor if you haven't done it before! I need to caulk my bathtub and re-grout bathroom tiles, but I keep putting it off because I'm afraid of messing it up.

Is there any caulk that is actually mold resistant?  Or do I really just have to Recaulk every year for the rest of my life?  Should I spray a mildew thingy after each shower?  Ventilation is good and things are pretty dry, but there are crevices

Well done Dragoncar.  I too suffer from a lack on handy-man tendencies so I know that little steps represent an important shift towards greater self-sufficiency and cost savings.  We're proud of you!

The trick with re-caulking (and it can be a bit tricky even for an experienced handy person) is immediately you have done the caulking it to wet your finger and smooth the top of the caulking.

Don't press too hard of you will squeeze our the wet caulk.. your just smoothing the top.. re-wet your finger after every foot or two... Comes out great.

I'm impressed!  Our caulking always turns out pretty ragged!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
