Installed my own gas lines
« on: October 15, 2024, 10:41:53 PM »
I've been a DIY'er for a while and wanted a gas stove in the kitchen I'm DIY'ing but didn't want to have a 3rd party propane company involved as the tank is massive and they tend to fill it up whenever the Propane is most expensive.  I figured the job would have cost around $2K for the tank and the black pipe plumbing.  So I poured my own little concrete pad, got a two 30lb tank setup for an RV and bolted the tanks to the pad using all thread and epoxy and plumbed all the black pipe myself put in a two stage regulator.  Pressure tested and checked for leaks.  Works great.  Total cost around $200.  It's only feeding small gas range so expect the tanks will last for months and as I put in extra valves I can pull one out at a time and just refill myself.   I use solar for everything else.

Nice!

Did you have any issues with permitting and/or inspection?  I'm pretty sure that my local code would require that someone with a license sign off on the installation before the inspection.  I don't doubt that a competent diy'er could do a safe installation on something as simple as this, but I'd be concerned that there could be problems with an unpermitted installation when it came time to sell or if I ever had a gas-related insurance claim.

Nice work.  How did you ground and bond the flexible lines?

I'm presently building an ADU that is fully permitted.  This one is flying under the radar for the time being. If I needed to sell I'd get it retroactively inspected and/or just remove the tanks.

realistically it's no more dangerous that a gas grill people put on their deck without a second thought.

Very cool.

In Asia, many of my places had propane tanks for the stove (in the kitchen : )

I also thought about putting in an outdoor Asian wok burner. Just never got to it.
