I bought a car!
« on: August 21, 2016, 03:34:04 PM »
My husband's 2002 Toyota Corolla had been on its last legs for awhile now. It took us 4 months, but we finally purchased a 2007 Prius with cash. (Next time I'll pay with card for the points, but oh well.) It was only 4.9k! With minor mechanical fixes and licensing/tax it'll come to 6.9k, but we still feel like we got a great deal and great fuel efficiency with no monthly payments. So excited!

Congrats. Has the hybrid battery been replaced yet? I have an 06 and had to replace the battery this year, even though I have low miles. The batteries last about 10 years, regardless of mileage, so just keep that in mind. I love my Prius!

It hasn't been changed yet, so I know the car is a gamble. I'll start saving for that right away. It only has 133k miles so I was hoping to have a little time.

I guess I made a good deal on my 04 Honda Civic at 120k miles... cost me 3000 USD and so far other than the timing belt replacement (which cost me 500 USD in parts and labor) it has worked flawlessly... currently standing at 136k miles (bought last summer)

Mine had 103K or so when the battery just stopped holding a charge. Luckily there is a guy somewhat locally who was able to install an OEM battery at my house for pretty cheap. It is guaranteed and should last another 10 years or so. Also changed out the 12V battery since that one needs to be changed every 5 years or so.

Congrats! My wife and I just bought a 2007 Prius for $5500, 111k miles. We've put ~600 miles on it so far and averaged 51mpg. I'm thinking about getting a bluetooth OBD reader so I can watch the battery cell voltages, but so far so good for the original battery.

Check out priuschat.com if you haven't found it already.

I know that they use a lot of Prii (did that term ever catch on?) and other hybrids for taxis in NYC and many of those have 500,000 miles on the original batteries. Just some food for thought.
