I'm so not a badass, BUT
« on: August 26, 2014, 03:02:20 PM »
I have made tons of progress so far this year.  Between my contributions, my employer contributions and gains, I'm up $39,000 in my 401K, up to $193,000.  I've also saved $31,000 total in my two kids' 529 plans and paid off a car loan of $7400.

My goal for the 529s for the year is $20,000 for each kid, so I have $9,000 to go.  We're not in bonus season any more, but it's just over $2,000 a month.  Whew.

I make less per month than what you need to save per child. Your relief at how little you need to save per month per child, added to how much you've gained this year, leads me to believe you're doing more than alright...You're pretty much badass.

ETA to add that I also put $3800 into an HSA this year.  Also that I need to save $2K per month, not per month per child.  Each kid gets an additional $4500 this year, if I can swing it.

Thank you.  I make a lot of money, but that's really more luck than anything else.  I wish it was badassity.  I live in the New York metro area, where salaries are high and where the COL can be very high if you let it.  I work in a somewhat volatile industry, and we can lose our jobs at any moment.  So there's that. But no matter way you slice it, I'm very lucky.  I was wasting incredible amounts of money before I found this site, and it would have been very ugly come college time if I hadn't figured out how to get control of my financial life.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. Still, LOTS more than me :) Luck can be badassity, too. Especially if you leverage it to save up more money than you spend in a year to provide a path to early retirement and massive financial security. Good on you for figuring life out!

Thanks.  I just checked out your blog.  It didn't say your age, but you're obviously a young guy and you're light years ahead of where I was at your age.  I'm 44.  You'll be way ahead of me when you're my age.

Yeah, I'm pretty young. I'll be 22 next week. Even if I'll be doing better then, you're still doing pretty great at your age compared to the rest of the country :D
