I'm Caitlin, and I own a Badass Mustachian Business
« on: July 06, 2016, 06:29:18 PM »
My name is Caitlin Pyle (Google me to learn more), and I live in Orlando, Florida! About six weeks ago, I stumbled across the MMM blog, and since then I've read every single post :-D Some more than once. My eyes have been opened.

I'm 29 and my husband Ben is 33. We are bloggers/entrepreneurs that have experienced a $1.2 million+ windfall of blog revenue in just 18 months.

Both of us came from $30k/year or less jobs. We've spent the last year traveling through South America with our laptops in tow. We're in Montevideo, Uruguay right now and we go home on Saturday. We've been pretty frugal with the accommodations in our travels -- definitely not the cheapest places (hostels and campsites are not for us), but we've found low-cost AirBnB's. Our biggest hangup has been reliable internet. Some places have had it; others have not.

We have splurged some (took a 3-week vacation in March; occasionally stayed a ritzier hotel), but we also did the following:

- paid off our 15-year mortgage 9 years early
- saved up for a down payment on a piece of land. We are going to build our dream "green" house!
- saved over $70,000 in taxes due to the foreign earned income exclusion since we were out of the country for 330 days in a 365-day period.
- invested over $360,000 in low-fee index funds and our SEP accounts (Betterment and Wealthfront). Every month when we do our numbers, we are excited to see how much we can add to our accounts. We have quite a bit of cash in a savings account but we're waiting on our accountant to finish our returns (we had an extension because of the foreign earned income exclusion) to make sure we don't owe anything.
- cut business expenses drastically. I was paying a virtual assistance company $1500 a month for 20 hours of work. Meanwhile, I was paying my office manager less than that and she was getting WAY more done!! So I cut off the overpriced VAs and gave my office manager a small raise. We also fired someone who had been doing a piss-poor job managing Facebook ads for us (saved $650 per month!).
- we stopped donating $50 a month to another couple we know who are "missionaries" -- I'd been getting increasingly tired of seeing their poor spending habits displayed on Facebook and so we finally pulled the plug. We are going to be donating to Charity: Water or Ocean Cleanup instead!
- we had put in a $1000 deposit for a Tesla Model 3. We canceled it! We're going to use the money to get solar panels on our house instead.
- We have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra (27/37), and we decided not to buy a second car when we got home from South America -- we bought bikes instead!
- instead of paying for a flight on Southwest to a conference we have to go to later this year, we signed up for a Southwest credit card instead so we could fly for FREE!

It's exhilarating to plug in the things I cut from our spending into my "How Big is Your Stash?" spreadsheet and see the expected growth over 10 years!!

Our net worth is currently $916,864 including our house (valued at $164k) that we're currently renting for $1200 per month. We expect to cross $1 million NW within six months.... before the end of the year! My husband also has a trust fund in the $400k range (he thinks) that's not included in our NW. His dad still has control over it. Crazy, I know.

We are now employing MM technique in our decisions as much as possible. We are NOT handy people, so I highly doubt we'll be using our own elbow grease to build our new house, but we are seeking out savings there where we'd otherwise have been suckered into going the more expensive route. For example, we're going to get an IKEA kitchen instead of buying a custom-made kitchen, and we're going to use the super durable luxury vinyl planking instead of porcelain wood-look tile.

This has become somewhat of a game for me -- I signed up with Personal Capital and enjoy plugging in numbers into the retirement calculator. We've calculated our FI level to be $1.5 million, but we enjoy what we do so much that we'll probably just keep on going. Why not, right?! We've automated many parts of our businesses and I currently only work 2-3 hours each morning.

Anyway :-) I wanted to share my joy and excitement with you!! I had been experiencing this strange little fear of losing my income or if it plummets at some point, I worried I would struggle finding something else to do to create income. Now that I finally get that my money can work harder than I can, I am putting it to work now... so if the high income from the blog does peter out, it doesn't even matter because I'll likely never have to "work" again! That assurance is priceless.

Excellent work!

So many people that get large amounts of money squander it so egregiously. It's great to see people making decisions that will set them up for a lifetime of abundance.

Very very impressive on all fronts. Just be sure to keep the pressure on, at all times. There have many people in your shoes who have let things get away from them.

Keep it real and keep it tight.  I'm absolutely stoked for the two of you!

Caitlin - You are a case study of badassery. Thanks for sharing your journey and decision making process behind that journey.

At some point, you're going to have to tell us more about your windfall of blog revenue. That sounds like a journey in itself.

Thanks for the encouragement!! We are stoked. DH and I just had an awesome talk today about how freeing and certain it feels to be able to plan ahead like this. We talk regularly about friends we used to envy because they always had nice things, but we've since realized they're just in debt. The best part is knowing that in just a few years, it won't even matter if the income from the business dries up because our money can work harder than we can!!

I'm having a blast now reading through the forums now that I've finished the blog. I hope to be more active on threads in the future. I stay pretty busy with work these days.

(And to those who think I posted just to spam or make more money, do you *really* think I need to do that? lol. Seriously though. I said just to Google me to give people a way to find out how I was earning the money -- because I've been interviewed a lot and I'm sure there are people out there who want to know. If I wanted people on this forum to visit my website that badly, I'd have posted a URL or at the very least the name of my blog, don't you think? I sell digital products and online courses for 99% of my income, so paltry visits to my website really don't matter. Thanks for the premature judgment :-P ... I hope you're the minority here.)

Lovely products which I'm sure can be found on your website just a quick google away!

I think we just give her the benefit of the doubt. In thread at least. Part of her job is self promotion; this part of the forums is for self promotion. It's sounds like she's got a lot to be proud of and won't be chucking her cash into the consumer sucker black hole.

Wow Caitlin!  Very impressive.  Congrats on your success so far!  :)

Sounds like you found MMM at exactly the right time, that's awesome.  Your changes sound quite badass.

Ignore the negative comments, there will always be a few.  And we do get a fair amount of spam around here, so people tend to be on their guard--not personal.

Welcome!  I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy reading more about your story, if you're willing to start a "journal" thread.

Oh sorry I thought the share badassity forum was for sharing stuff like I lost weight! I found a new job that pays more. I didn't realize you could also promote crappy travel blogs and shill bad digital products whatever those are. Carry on!!

[MOD EDIT: Please read forum rule #1. That's three posts like that in this one thread.  The next one will earn you a temporary ban.  If you don't like the thread, don't open it.]

Nice job!! Please share how the blog windfall provided you all the income. It seems you direct all income and net worth just to that but I wonder if it's really a combination of things.

Thanks, guys!! I think I will start a journal thread. We're on the eve of our very last day in South America and things are going to be hectic for a while, but I think I would like to start tracking my progress and sharing my struggles/triumphs. And fears... like riding a bike in the sweltering Florida heat :-D

In a nutshell, the vast majority of our windfall was/is from the proofreading course I built and the surrounding blog. I was a proofreader for court reporters for quite a few years and earned $40k per year. Then I wrote an eBook in 2014 which sucked, but it got me started and is what eventually became my online course in 2015. To date, I've sold various versions, pieces, and portions of my course to more than 2,000 people.

I've since teamed up with two other instructors to help them make over their online courses and market them the way I market mine. I earn a share of their revenue. My courses still earn more money than theirs, though, and I think it is because I offered something totally unique to the market. The other courses have more competition, but they are still making sales because the marketing is solid.

I have also been dabbling in affiliate marketing for various products, and I've published four books this year. My main business goal for 2016 was to increase my revenue streams beyond just the course sales, and so far I've been meeting that goal.

We do receive $1165 per month rental income, but everything else comes from our blog and online business.

I appreciate the welcome! I try to get on here in the evenings before bed. It's great to be learning from everyone.

I sense another course on making an online course successful and how to market it :-)

I could use this advice for a course I'm building. However I haven't looked around yet for any advice but probably should.

I've already got one, lol! My husband is in charge of it and is currently remodeling the website. I created the content last summer but just got too busy to get it going. We beta tested it for eight months, though. One of my students is [MOD EDIT: Link removed.]; [MOD EDIT: Link removed.]  is another. Send me a PM if you would like more details; I don't want to appear spammy ;-)

HI, Caitlin! Welcome to the blog! I think you are being really badass! If I had an income jump like yours, I doubt I could resist getting a Model 3.

Ignore the few negatives - there have been a lot of people shilling their money-related blogs, so I think some have gotten oversensitive.

Thank you for the support, guys!! :-)

I totally get it; there are a lot of bloggers out there just trying to get more traffic by piggybacking on other people's blogs/forums. What's even more annoying is the number of blogs out there labeled as "personal finance" and their main source of income is teaching people how to start a "money-making" blog... and all it is is a tutorial for Bluehost (Bluehost offers affiliates $75 commission for each new hosting package they refer). I'm a Bluehost affiliate, too, but my tutorial isn't about starting a blog, it's about starting a freelance website to help you market your business, and it is VERY thorough on what to include. Much more in-depth than your everyday "tutorial" which is usually nothing more than a "here's how to buy a hosting plan"... lol. But... that's for another post for another day.

I will be starting a journal. I am looking forward to learning more from you all and sharing in each other's journeys!!
